The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
I know I left the radiator, alternator, water pump and intake manifold on, and I had plenty of room. I'm pretty sure I left the air filter assembly on too. However, I did remove the battery/tray, pcm, COP's and spark plugs. I took the plugs out for inspection, and so that it would be easier to rotate the crank without fighting compression.
Started last night after work, took about 7 hours to expose everything. I'll post learnings later, but could use some advise from our pros. Timing chain marks are off by one tooth on both LH RH and crankshaft same direction. Before this truck, ran well except the slap from a broken chain guide. See pics. As long as my new chains are all lined up, then I should be able to place new chains correctly and maintain time.

There in time correctly.
To see for yourself,
rotate the chain 2 teeth on the crank gear & phaser gear & you will see that the chain is on correct.
(Its just that FORD didnt use the marked links to aline by)
If you had the harmonic balancer at the right position, tick mark should be at the 1:00 position and the cam lobes were pointing in the correct direction, then your motor should be in Time. Line the colored links up with the dot on the crank sprocket and then use a pair of vice grips on a non-journaled spot on the cam and turn the cam slightly until the phaser slips on. Ensure that the colored link on the phaser is correctly lined up with the mark on the phaser pointing between the colored links. Do that on both phasers then install the guides and tensioners if you have not already. Good luck.

Thanks Tom, I just put the cover back in place and harmonic balancer, cut out on pulley at TDC. So sound like I don't need to rotate cams, just vise grip in current location, and put new chains on correctly.
Your cam lobes on cyl 5 look right, the angle of the camera on cylinder 1 makes it hard to tell though. Take a look in my picture album under my profile and it has a drawing of the cam lobe positioning as well as the harmonic balancer timing mark. Once you look there, post your findings.
BTW, I opted out of buying $100 tool to remove the chosen rocker arms, and using method mentioned here with vise grips on phasers. So I didn't turn crank to 12 o'clock for removal then 6 o'clock for component swap. I'm going by the dot timing mark on crank sprocket at 6 o'clock. I'm I still go to go, or hold
