Hello, long time lurker, this is my 3rd 5.4 and first time with the knocks and the P0022 code on occasion. I was told by mechanic it was the cam phaser issue. Also reading could be the VCT solenoids.
I have an 05 Lariat with the 5.4 so I could do the Solenoids myself pretty easy looks like. I may try that but first, I am wondering if there is anyone on here in the St Louis, MO area that is experienced and does the Cam Phaser job really well, as outlined in the first post of this thread. I could pay to have the whole job done right.....
Shoot me a message if you know of anyone or you do it in the area, I don't want to go to a random mechanic or the dealership, can live with it but am interested.
Thanks!!
So I did order the VCT Solenoids and the gaskets last night, I will swap these out and see how it goes after that. Been getting the P0022 code so if this doesn't fix it, then have to decide on next steps...
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do I need to adjust the timing on this when its back together, or is it done via computer?
It's not dumb, but it is hilarious that you just replaced all of your timing components without knowing how the motor works No you you don't adjust anything
Not hilarious to me...lol. Admittedly I don't know much about timing. I've always owned foreign cars that ran forever without major engine failure like my truck. Lesson learned, I'll buy foreign next time.
You don't really have to with this repair... just remember that the right side of the engine is your left, from the front. Line up the links and the dots / marks and reassemble.
Question for those you've done this and helping us with this job. I've got all the parts, even ordered bolts for timing components, but the Ford Parts online diagram doesn't show the lower bolt for the RH (pass side) chain guide. HB5 for upper bolt, but HM1 at the bottom is a dowel for the chain tensioner guide. The LH guide has HB2 and HB3. I seem to remember a post that a long bolt was used for the lower LH guide and upper RH guide and a shorter bolt, HB3 possibly, was used for the opposite ends. Please confirm if you can recall. Thanks
Each guide only has 1 bolt and 1 dowel pin. I think the HB3 part on the diagram below is a metal insert into the guide that your new parts should have already installed. If I recall, the LH and RH guide bolts are different lengths, however it will be obvious where to put them when you install the guides. The longer one needs to bolt through the entire width of the guide, while the shorter one only goes through ~1/4" plastic.
