The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
Alright guys, I got the truck all back together last night with disappointing result. The tick is still there! Mine just had all the timing components replaced about 3k miles ago. When we pulled the front cover we found the chain on the right side with substantial wear, and the the crankshaft sensor ring/ingnition pulse wheel very chewed up. So I replaced the chains, tensioners, phasers, and crank sensor wheel with OEM parts.
Where do I go from here? The tick seems to be coming from just behind the phaser on the right side, up high. Everything under the valve covers is in great shape. And, my buddy says it is crankshaft speed vs valve train speed.
Any ideas? What am I missing? Thanks for the help!!

Ah, gotcha! That will hold it in place so I can get a cheater bar on the socket. Perfect advice. Thank you.
my 2006 fx4 with 163K just started ticking the last few months. I had an 04 with the 5.4 with a very bad diesel cam phaser noise. My 2006 is just a steady tick. Only does it when warm though so shouldn't be exhaust leak right?
Okay, day two. (2004 5.4L 3V Triton)
I've removed all the stuff from the front of the engine (minus the PS Pump and the actual front engine cover).
I also was able to pull the driver's side valve cover - gee, only a 4 hr job for this rookie!! How the hell do you guys get that last bolt at the back of the cover off? (I felt like I was inventing tools - socket, 3" extension, swivel knuckle, 12" extension, 3/8" Wrench). Took forever!
Is there an easier way?
I'm dreading doing the passenger side!!
Also, pulled the driver's side plugs - only to find that they are not the OEM. Someone before me put in standard plugs (Champion). So, the good news is they came out without being broken - that bad news is that they weren't what they should have been and may indicate how the truck was treated before I owned it).
The inside of the valve cover appears to have a lot of varnish on it. More than I had hoped.
I plan to tackle the passenger side valve cover tonight. Any specific advice to make it go smoother would be welcomed! Even if I have to buy a special tool or something.
As always... Thank You!

Get those Champions out of there and replace with the SP515s. I'm sure you had plans for that already though.
Do some deep breathing exercises before you do the passenger side. The AC lines make everything difficult.
Thank you. Although that seems like a simple suggestion, I accept that as a eureka moment! Duh, use a 1/4 drive.
Just the advice I was looking for. Equally, I'll do some yoga before tackling the passenger side.
