I'm having a hard time believing the timing could be off unless the rough start it had when I put it all back together made it jump timing.

Any other ideas before I start draining fluids and taking everything apart?
Sucks. I'm about to do the same thing to try and find the problem. This time I'm changing the oil pump and everything else I can while I got it apart along with cleaning everything. My code is P0022 but I've replaced the VCT solenoid, (screen disappeared) and my timing was checked so many times that it can't be off. I rotated my crankshaft pulley 80 times I think just to watch it come all the way back around and back. I think I've got something in the pickup tube or I've got restricted oil flow in the engine somewhere. woohoo. Still have to check the oil pressure, this is just a hunch since I've changed just about everything else.

I bought a $900 89 Honda Accord to get back and forth to work. Loving the gas mileage (31mpg), hating the self esteem.

That's not very encouraging. I'm not looking forward to more work on this truck, just want to get rid of it. Too bad I still owe the bank for it.

So after running around a few times with 10W30 in the engine I don't get the diesel knock once warmed up anymore. I could trade it now or keep it and keep working on it. I'm keeping it.
I just checked the oil pressure. At idle, warm, I'm sitting at 68psi. Uhhhh wtf?

oil pressure dropped to 54 once the engine warmed up and settled down and sat there. If I rev it to 2000 I hit 75psi or so.

Got her started. Somehow the battery went completely dead from sitting disconnected from the truck.

Anyway, throwing some codes here.

P0345- camshaft sensor A
P0349- camshaft sensor A
P2197- O2 sensor signal biased/stuck

Back to the drawing board I guess.

Replaced the cam sensors. Started it up, idles at like 650 or so, not extremely rough but you can tell the motor is rocking back and forth. An audible clank is heard every couple seconds.

I let it idle for around two minutes then there was more of a grinding noise, so I shut it off.

Safe to say I ****ed something up.

Great.

Edit: also it doesn't show any codes other than the same ones as 'pending'

Did you look at the lobes when the engine was at TDC to make sure everything was on the right stroke? All slack removed from the guide sides for the timing chains?

I did exactly that. Unless I misinterpreted the images posted in this thread and the Haynes and Chilton guides I used for reference the whole time I was working.

I'm starting the tear down right now. Guess I'll figure out by tomorrow evening.

I'm hoping (for my ego) that I did everything right but got a bad part haha

Excellent work on this thread, wish I would have found it a couple months ago.

I had to pull my passenger head a few months ago in my front yard due to a buried spark plug that didn't want to be extracted... Had a hell of a time doing the timing but got it set right.

Except now last week I had both vct's through timing error codes and I brought it in for a diagnostic, dealer told me the timing was off, and that I needed new main bearings and told me to get a new short block and let them install it for a deal of 6500$. Now I'm a pretty handy mechanic and told them to get bent... 1 week later I have my engine on a stand just waiting for my new timing set, oil pump, water pump, main bearings, headstuds, and headers to come in before tearing it apart.

I pulled the valve covers and discovered that my timing chains are now two links off their respective marks and was wondering if this is due to wore out tensioners.... BTW replaced the can phasers last time I was in the motor. And would it be a good idea to do the vcts while I have the motor out of the truck?

Ok so I am back to doing this job a second time. I have it all stripped down and am trying to decide where to go from here. Truck is about to turn 200k. Pass side chain tensioner has failed, everything else looks ok. It has never run quite right since I did this job last, and have heard a light knocking from one of the doorman phasers I put in last time. This time around I am looking at doing everything (rocker, lash adjusters, oem phasers chains etc)
My question is, I found a set of (supposedly oem) lash adjuster/rockers on ebay for around $300. It claims it does not fit 04 models, just 05 on up 3v?? Are these different in the o4 5.4 3v?
