The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
Heres mine guys. Whats your opinions? I think i hear chain slap and phasers for sure. But who knows what all it is Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ITElVTyy5I
Ok, posted a week or so about my cold start noise after repairing all the timing chains and such. We have had nice weather for the past week or two and i have not used my AC at all, and since i have not been using it, my truck has not made the cold start grind sound at all.
Any AC related cold start noises? Last 1-2 seconds.. Its gotta be ac related because before the decent weather my truck would do it pretty much every other cold start.
Again, thank you guys for all the info and help! <3

If the weather has been cooler the engine cools down faster and the oil being a higher viscosity when cool may not be leaking past the tensioners as quickly. I noticed my truck has the timing chain noise at start-up more often during warmer weather.
Try using the AC even if the weather is cooler and see if you get the noise to try and narrow down the cause.
Looks like my truck is doing the same.
2009-5.4
8x,xxx miles
I bought new.
Always Motorcraft oil & filters
I have always done all my maintenance/service work the last 25yrs.
Last night as I was turning around in my yard my truck started stumbling & acted like it was going to shut down. I increased the throttle & the stumble stopped. I noticed that my engine sounded like it was going to throw a rod on the passenger side of the engine/truck.
A couple hours later I hooked to my boat/trailer to relocate it in the yard & noticed that when I increased the throttle against the load the knock sound was noticeable.
Today when I went to start my truck the engine went into a long start no start mood so I turned the key off. 15min later I tried again & the engine started. I couldnt get the noise to recur after start up so I let it idle for roughly 30min before trying to get the noise to recur but still nothing.
I drove it a few miles & the noise was very lite sounding. I let the engine run roughly another 30min & no change in sound.
Last March (end of winter & about 7mths ago)
I noticed a slight sound (ticking like) difference around the top the of the engine that I later dismissed.
I hope Ive caught this before its gotten to severe

Ive drove it some more to try to get the noise to recur & nothing so far!!
Im planning to start disassembling around the 1st part of December.
Dang sparkplugs are roughly 80bucks LoL
Now am I correct to think that this is a symptom due to that seal that bleeds oil down & starves the lash adjusters??

As i posted in my other thread. Need help asap guys. Im tore down again. And ready to put back together. Everything im reading says im ready
"Ok i jumped time on start somehow on the driver side by like 2 links, but i set it up again verifying everywhere i can look that its correct. The cam phasers advanced 1 link per rotation do they not? Its same on both sides
So when you set the chains, and rotate one full rotation. The links would be advanced 1 correct?"
Because thats whats happening

Ok so as long as everything is lined up and the same on both sides, It should essentially be fine i suppose. I know it definitely jumped on driver side when i crunk up tho, when i shut down the first time i heard a *Tink*. So i didn't undo the tensioners so they would keep their prime or at least a little oil in them, same as oil filter, i put the clip back in the tensioners, pulled the phasers off one at a time. Moved the chain, Matched the links and set the timing with camshaft sprocket, Pulled the cams back the amount they jumped with some vice grips and slid it on the key slot. Hoping the bastard works in the morning, getting irritated.

We are getting ready to do a job for a customer- this job here you are all talking about. Wondering how to check or if it is normal for this to happen- bent valves? Gonna put this all back together with new parts but we aren't sure if we are missing something with the valves. Customer got truck with the noise you are all explaining and we told him to get rid of it. He didn't and now it went. Thing is, the job has already been done but left side parts were on the right side....
Here we are doing it all over again. Waiting for the parts to show up and we are just trying to read up on the job a little more and make sure we aren't missing anything before we go back together with it!
Thanks!!!
