I had plans of doing many great things today..... however, when I went out to check on the Escape this morning, and wouldn't ya know it, a puddle of trans fluid. Long story short, I used a Timken seal on it, and it appears to have been the culprit. I thought the seal looked less then adequate when I opened the box, but decided to go with it anyway. My bad.... real bad. I wound up going over to Napa and getting an SKF from them, which is who makes these particular seals in most good transmission kits. My Buddy came over while I was installing it and he showed me a trick he uses on seals - and particularly the CD4E's and AX4N/AXOD's (Taurus trans). He packs the backside of the seal with wheel bearing grease to keep the spring from accidentally popping out when driving it into the bore.

So far so good on the SKF seal. Fingers are crossed.

Damn Whitey. Too bad that they can't make decent seals anymore. The materials are better, but the design seems lacking at times.

On the Escape navi head. It uses the same plugs that yours does. Yours should be the grey and black flat style plugs. Same as our 97-98s. It's the 08 and newer Escapes that use the newer J1 style (24 pin grey), like the GEN 11's.

Yeah... I was not at all impressed by that seal. For curious minds, here is the difference...

That looks more like a front timing cover seal than an axle seal. I thought axle seals were shielded like the first one. Wow, what a POS

Pretty much!

I did get two things marked off my list that I wanted to do today. I did put the garage heater to work since I was out there. It works rather well. It was 36 degrees here at 11am, and it snowed in the upper parts of the mountains. Also got the gas fireplace going tonight. For some reason, whoever bought it (I am the 3rd owner of my home) didn't buy the fan kit. Also found out it is only 49% efficient. Might just buy a different insert for it. I've seen 99.9% efficient units for sale.

No worries. It took 5 hours for it to make it into a backwoods shop where I had to replace it myself because their mechanics would be a while. Then I make it 100 miles down the road and it slings another belt.

How the hell does a new engine not have it's pulleys lined up? JD Power and ***. Highest initial quality my ***. Lol
