my 21 Lariat updated to 3.5.2 yesterday. since then I have no connection to my vehicle on Ford pass and the WiFi on truck is not working/connecting. anyone came across this before? may be Sync reset???appreciate any suggestions.
Sometimes I'm glad I'm behind on OTAs. It gives Ford time to fix the flawed updates they sometimes send out.
This is actually true! It illustrates one of Ford's primary failings as it struggles to become a software outfit. To wit, it has a long ways to go in configuration management, revision control, and validation.
Here's what those mean:
- Configuration control refers to the pairing of certain features on the truck with the appropriate software to operate those features. Releasing a revision to a particular feature that somehow breaks a different feature is an example of the failure of configuration management. On the surface of it, it would appear that Ford is attempting to manage too many configurations of its base product, each requiring essentially a unique software load. A recipe for disaster.
- Revision control refers to the manufacturer's ability to manage the various software revisions/bug fixes that it releases. Ford is apparently doing a poor job of managing the revisions it releases. Note that this is distinct from configuration management.
- Validation refers to the assurance that an update, once released will a) fix the problem being targeted or implement the feature being added and b) IMPORTANTLY won't break anything else.
Obviously all three are closely related.
Some cad recently observed that "Ford is a 109 year old software start up". That's actually true. Apparently they have recently hired some big guns from the software industry to help them, here's hoping that those big guns focus first on putting appropriate software development, deployment, and maintenance processes in place before turning their attention to the next big whizzy feature. We shall see.
For the meantime, the age old advice is probably best: The first model year or two of a major update is likely to suffer from some growing pains. All our friends with 2021 F-150s can attest to that.
Purely through dumb luck and timing, I ended up with a 2022 - fingers crossed that its software proves to be reliable over the long term.
Just the thoughts of a retired veteran of the high technology industry (networks, supercomputing).
Hey guys trying to find out about updates for my 22
I received my vehicle Mar 23 2022. I have never gotten a notice or update via the truck or the Ford pass app. Went to the dealer and he said I was up to date… same as my truck screen says. My version says 4.0.21297. and has never changed. I have automatic updates turned on and with a 7 day recurring schedule.
My vin is 1FTFW1E89NKD30633
I was hoping someone could help with insight as to my situation.
Thank You in advance
