I am using the listing of steps from the SW download site to install the needed components.
I install FRDS only in step 1. When I tried opening FDRS, it says VCI is required, so I install that as outlined in step 2. Step 3 is not needed since IDS isn't installed. Step 4 isn't needed as I am not using a VCMM...
AM I missing something obvious...?
I only used step 1 and then it required me to do step 2. So you are doing this correct.

Thanks for the confirmation @gwallers . I just wanted to be sure I am not just totally missing some nuanced part of the install. I think it must not be liking the virtual machine installation, although the VM has internet access and really should have nothing to do with impacting this part of the license validation process.
I can't really justify spending another $600 on a physical Win10 laptop on top of the $625 for the Mongoose interface and Pro-Logix charger, all to get an update that should be coming for free from Ford... But they can't seem to get out of their own way right now and figure this stuff out as many others have pointed out. I was so hopeful when the 21G01 came out thinking they had their stuff figured out, but boy was that a poor assumption to make. I guess my mistake was buying the "Limited" model thinking it was referring to a high level trim package; come to find out it is actually referring to the status of tech functionality in the truck....

You definitely have to choose Non-Dealer Motorcraft here but you need to add the license first and you can get the activation code here by logging in and copying/pasting it into FDRS: https://www2.helminc.com/ngsm/login.asp?

I have the account that was created as a non-Dealer prior to purchasing the 2 day FRDS license.
I left out the next line in this screenshot, but I am using the 20 character Activation Code. Status is "Available" and "Last Validated" is NA so showing that it has not been assigned yet to any computer.
I am running this on a fresh Win10Pro 64-bit VM with 4 CPUs,16GB RAM and 100GB SSD, with all the latest SW updates.
Five hours with FDRS and the truck is up to date.
Heads up IPAM update takes nearly three hours to complete.
Another bit of unsolicited advise. If you have GW (Gateway updates) complete them first before starting any other update.
Tried using a virtual windows image and that failed miserably so, native windows machine is needed.

So it's not letting you copy/paste the activation code into the license area in FDRS? Once that happens you should be able to login.

Another bit of unsolicited advise: make sure your laptop is set for power saving not to turn off when plugged in after inactivity otherwise it may shutoff during a long update.

I could cut/paste the code without issue, but after pasting I then hit the “Continue” button, I would get the License Manager Error window…. It’s moot now as I am sending the Mongoose and Pro-Logic back tomorrow…
It seems this license failure may be due to using a VM as the host machine. But I run Macs, and I can’t justify another $600 for a physical Windows laptop on top of the $625 I’ve already spent, so gonna cut my losses to the $50 FRDS license I’ll never get to use... I’ll just try my best to keep hounding Ford to fix this pile of Blue Cruise poo they have created.
Does anyone know if there are certain modules to update first to make the whole update process go a little more smoother? I have an appointment tomorrow to drop the truck off for the trailer brake and wiper recall, and was going to try and help them out with updating my truck. Thanks in advance.
