Hey , thanks for the pick Shane! Here's the way I understood it since I haven't had to pull the short shaft from the front diff. You mention the cover and C-clip removal which makes sense to me...just like a rear axle shaft right. But from these posts, it looks like you don't have to pull the cover, -

Snips from research, -
1. The Short shaft (Axle Cluster Gear Shaft) on the right side has thrust bearings to hold it in place. No need to remove the cover for that. The long axle shaft, passenger side, has a snap ring to hold it in place.

2. You can just unbolt the tube from the axleshaft and from the differential, then unplug the vaccuum lines and pull the tube off. There's some random crap holding the short axle shaft inside that tube. I think it was just a small c-clip or something. Remove the axle from the inside of the tube and you can access the seal. $200 for this crap.

I'm going to find out regardless, sounds like it isn't clipped in the diff..I might as well leave attached. Iduno, it still has to be dropped in order to align, otherwise you won't be able to install it. I've read a few where they removed it , but couldn't re-align without lowering...just a little.

So the center bushing is the one the wears ? I'll get one, they list as the same bushing for all locations.

Interesting... I am curious how that works now. I'd like to know how it goes for you. I wanted to break into this one anyway, although it all appears to be fine....

This is probably one spare thing I don't really need, LOL. As soon as I get rid of it, one of my two axles will puke though.

Brew......Marshall's auto parts in Circleville OH has 5 or more complete 355 front diff's for your truck. They are 99.95 each. That might be the way to go. 100 plus the ride to Michigan. Not bad, I wouldn't think.

Stoney Creek Auto has one in Charleton MI for 155. Maybe that is easier to get to for you.

Whitey....I almost got the door open yesterday. It's getting there. My fat butt still doesn't go thru it yet, but another few days of warmth should make it so I can get it open.. This year, I'm lowering the pad, so I don't have this happen for a 4th year. You'd think I'd of learned the first year, but NO. Not me. Lol

Might be worth hanging on to. But you'll most likley never need it. Not really a wear item. Now a rear axle, yea, I'd hang onto a spare. You could probably sell yours white, not sure what it's worth. Hell I can find out real quick, - out of 30 listings (there's a lot more), low price is 400, high is 1250, the rest are in between. Looks like 600 is a good average around here....perhaps more, there's quite a few higher than that. That's a little mad money lol.

They want 125 for a hollow tube, could of gone a little lower, not much. I'll let you know if anything is holding it in the dif..clip.

Hollander has one in Lansing, 45 minutes - hour away but it's for the complete unit. I don't need that...I think!

I better take mine apart first, just to make sure nothing else is broken...hold off on the tube for now. Something looks a little goofy with actuator. Like I said before, the 4wd works flawlessly, checked it. Yea, dismantle first, then decide. What bugs me about it, it didn't leak until I got it back to my kids place. No spray from driving it...strange. It hit hard, lifted the front of the truck up. Glad it hit the axle and not the oil pan..the pick up is right there, probably would of spent the engine driving it home...ie no oil pressure.

Thanks AK!
