Thinking
So I'm needing a new multi meter. What are yall using and what should I stay away from? Mine decided it was going to read voltage anymore, no matter what setting I put it to.

I have several different multi-meters, as I am a multi-meter *****.
I have a Klein, Fluke, Craftsman, Extech, GE, and a couple HF's.
The Fluke is the most accurate. But, my Klein is right there with it, and for the price is probably a better buy for what most people are going to use it for. I thought I had an issue with my Klein, but figured out that I was using it wrong as an amp clamp. Didn't realize you put the clamp on the hot side only.
Anyway, my Klein is a True RMS multi-meter, an amp clamp, it does capacitance, and it's a thermometer all in one. All for under 60 bucks. It also has a back light which I didn't think much about until I needed it.
This is my Fluke. Pretty basic, but still a good meter - very accurate.
FWIW, I also have one of these. For 20 bucks, I can't complain.... at all. This is real handy when you have a network mess you are trying to solve. I realize it's not a meter, but just in case any of you need something like this - it is a good little unit for the money

Thank y'all so much. I don't need it to be accurate to the nth degree but having one I can depend on would be wonderful. I'll look into those link and do some reading. Thank guys.
I like the Ideal meter, favorite so far....61-762.

I've had 3 or 4 different brands of meters, and by far, the Flukes are the best and most accurate. I stole a brand new one of eBay two years ago, #117, in an auction for $22. I also found a full set of the add on connectors, TLK282, in their pouch, on Craigslist for $20. I sold my Klein for what I have in the Fluke set up, so I did well overall.
My continuity meter, T5600, is also Fluke. I found it when I was at the Salvation Army thrift store. I gave $3. for it and still use it 6 years later. I have a cheap version of a clamp meter, but I've never had call to use it, so it's value is nill. lol

I've been lucky, I have yet to own an inaccurate meter. It's more either they work or they don't. If you use one every day or want more of dedicated meter, I would go for a Fluke, an 88v for automotive.
You can get by perfectly fine with a cheapy, well, not TOO cheap, something mediocre like a Greenlee, Southwire or Klien. In meters, I would have to say Craftsmen is the worst. That's because you can't be what your getting per dollar. A craftsman may be a re-branded Fluke or, it may not.
Big box stores stock good mediocre-good meters.
My experiences anyway.
So white, did you look up the 61-762 yet lol. That's a great all around meter for the price jp, I like it better than the Fluke. I've had mine for over a decade, favorite among electricians as well..ease of use and reliability. They still make them if that tells you anything, oh wait, they upped the number to 61-763 lol.

My Dad has a Fluke 8060A, which I believe is the best meter I've ever used, period. He got it for like 50 bucks at a pawn shop in the early 90's. Such a dead-on accurate meter.
Fun trivia... did you know the guy who started Fluke, John Fluke, was good friends with the Packard of Hewlett Packard?
