The spare alt is there for insurance that the existing one will never go bad. 
The LS, though I could use. I haven't wanted to spend the dough for the gear change, and that's when I thought it would be about $2200. Now COStruck told me he was quoted $3K (same shop). I just can't do it. Shouldn't be too bad to swap out the carrier though and I need to change the fluid anyway. (Wonder if I'll need friction modifier. )
EDIT: I still have the G2 aluminum cover I bought back then, too.

Okay then use the 828. You will just have a 1 wheel wonder in the snow and ice. 829's are limited slip. I would think that in Canada, like Alaska, Limited slip would be a no-brainer.
