Shipping might be a little crazy, like 150 plus I expect.

You'll find a fair or good deal somewhere. The yard warranties are usually 30 days. Do the same thing, pull the cover off and post pics before you install. Your chances on getting a good one out weigh the ugly imo.

Question;
Is this a chance for him to upgrade to a Limited Slip rear end?

And FWIW, to drop my driveline, I think I remember an odd 12 point star bolthead. I had to buy a special socket - but mine is 2001.

I was encouraged by some local mechanics to buy a used rear end. I preferred to do the rebuild myself, though I had not done one before. It was not too bad, but my housing was in good shape. No real gear damage. I'm old. Old people want to fix things - not swap in a major assembly. YMMV

Looked locally on line for a scrap yard. They order it in though.
I saw a 3.08 axle but that won't do.

Is a 3.73 stronger than a 3.55 ?
Again...is your truck 4WD?

At the "you pull" yards here, they don't care what ratio, brand, limited slip... it's all the same price ($120 last time I checked).
