Thinking
Personally, and if in your position....I'd find a used rear end/axles complete locally. I looked for them about 3 years ago using those links I posted for you. There were plenty to choose from around me and much more cost friendly. They are easy to determine good or bad under warranty time or at the yard.
You ran yours very low for 3 years, that's what cooked it.

It's possible, but doubtful. The pieces usually fall to the bottom. I've never had noise coasting one....that I can recall.
It's also possible to jam them up when that happens. You may have to go forward and reverse a few times to free them up and to get the pieces to fall to the bottom.
With all the swamp land around here, and burying the rear end every weekend, swamped it pretty quick....whether the breather survives or not. I knew it was happening and swapped out the fluid quite a bit. It was those times I new it was happening but ignored it that would catch up with me lol.
