I have a theory of why my rear diff may be turning it's newish gear oil into a sliver/metallic color ...
If the ride is stiffer on a truck with heavy duty leaf springs(5 leaf + helper springs) vs. factory springs(4leaf)...
doesn't that put more strain on the rear diff more ?
I can feel more bumps in the road, and the ride is in general more stiffer.
Probably gears coming together and rubbing more....
make sense somehow ?
I don't really haul anything serious or tow at all....
Your pictures today show why you have metal in your oil. Look at your ring gear. Your front line of the ring gear looks good, the backlash side is scarred badly. Your spiders and drive gears are shiny, so there is definite wear there too. Your pinion looks okay on the one angle, but can't make out the other.
I'd venture to say that your front pinion bearing once was replaced or should have been. The backlash must be way out of spec by the looks of the ring gear.
Well, personally.... this. I've literally spent every free moment getting my 89 ready for the show tomorrow. I decided to give it a little spin because I've taken a lot of electrical stuff out, etc. for painting, cleaning, etc. I got it back home, and went in to eat. I came back out and found this under it. Long story short, I know the new valve cover gaskets are leaking, and possibly the dipstick tube seal in the block. I could probably have it all done in an hour or two.... but I'm beat. So, Frankie it my chariot tomorrow. Damn it....
