I picked up my 2000 f-150 super cab a month ago and it had the tick sound that I thought was phasers. Seeing as it needed an oil change, I got a motorcraft filter and rotella 15w40 since others had tried it. Since the change it seems quiet on cold idle, but much louder under 2k rpms when warmed up. Should I give it more time or go to the 5w20? It's a knocking/ tick sound. When I bought the truck the previous owner said it's been that way for 5 years no issues. New plugs too. I know its louder after the oil change though.

Default Solved the problem

Loved my Screw 4x4 trucks but had the issue on a 2005 and then my 2008. With only 68K miles on my 2008 I replaced the chains, guides, phasers, everything, and it acted up again after only a few weeks. I finally solved the problem, sold it and bought a Dodge. Loved the Fords but not the engine, vibration, or bed shake issues. Very happy now. Sorry Ford.

Betamax, you don't have cam phasers. This discussion is only for the 3 valve 5.4L motor, not the 2 valve motor.

If I have a 2000 with a 5.4 triton, don't I have cam phasers?

with the heavy oil it may not be getting oil everywhere in the motor. Put what it calls for...

Ok, posted a week or so about my cold start noise after repairing all the timing chains and such. We have had nice weather for the past week or two and i have not used my AC at all, and since i have not been using it, my truck has not made the cold start grind sound at all.

Any AC related cold start noises? Last 1-2 seconds.. Its gotta be ac related because before the decent weather my truck would do it pretty much every other cold start.

Again, thank you guys for all the info and help! <3

It could be your compressor clutch going out.
