Why do they need a usb, if I can do it with a mongoose cable?
I don’t know the exact meaning behind it, but I know when I updated with the mongoose you have to insert a USB drive and have some files loaded from FDRS onto it and then inserted into the USB by the wireless charger under the radio. It’s fairly simple. You just basically follow the directions on the screen.

Due to the size of the files, there are 4 modules that get updated using a USB drive because otherwise, it would take hours to write the update using the cable. APIM, GWM, TCU and IPC are done with a USB drive that FDRS creates.

I forgot about the IPC. I had to use USB for that also.

Oh, I'll never forget about that. My job 1 2021 had a total of 3 IPC updates released for it. The first two would not come through via OTA or the USB for whatever reason, so I had to push it with FDRS using CAN. Each one of those IPC updates took 6 hours to do. lol

A nOOb question - if the update files are loaded on a USB, is a mongoose cable really needed? Could everything be updated via USB?

The short answer is no, but it is a lot more complicated than that.
With Sync 3, you could download updates for certain modules directly from the Ford website and install them with a USB. For Sync 4 vehicles, Ford removed that ability and FDRS is required to make the USB update packet as FDRS is the only way to get the files and the manifest for the USB update to work. Unless you have a way of getting all the files you need and you have a way of making a manifest with the VIN on it, you cannot "make" the USB update yourself.

That makes sense.
Thanks and have a great weekend!
Post a pic of your "About Sync" screen when you can. The APIM they swapped in was not properly programmed when they did it. It seems like maybe they were lucky and the files that got installed into it were right, because it shows they updated it a few times after they installed it. No rush in getting the pic; I can't look into it any further until tomorrow anyway.
The dealer did not install the new APIM correctly. The data on your truck does not match what is on the server. We can help you fix it, but you would need FDRS. The dealer cannot fix it; at this point would have to open a case with engineering so they can help them fix it.
