That was a hell of a couple days. BIL's trailer is a 3/4 tilt trailer, so we decided to put my Buddy's Chevy he was borrowing on it to see how well it worked. SOOOO glad we tried at my house before we left, because the 3/4 tilt was tilting before the whole truck was on the trailer, and although we did get the truck on it with some 2 X 6 planks, we weren't 100% certain the F150 would start. So, I ixnay'd that trailer. My Buddy called a friend of his who said he had one we could borrow. We loaded it up and I drove it about 2 miles, never going over 55mph - and that sumbitch was swaying like crazy. So, I pulled over and we took the Chevy back off. Decided to just go down there and try to get a Uhaul down there.... 270 miles away. First thing I did was pull the dipstick.... I wish I woulda taken a pic of it then, but the bottom 1/2 inch was SILVER! Metal shavings galore. But, the motor turned by hand, so I knew there was hope.
Well.... it started. It runs like crap, but I got it to start.... and got it up on the trailer under its own power. And on a whim, I found a Uhaul dealer that had just barely got one of there 12 foot trailers returned. For the record, U-Haul said this 12 footer would hole this truck. Technically, it did - and it stayed up there just fine. BUT, I was not happy with how it fit knowing we were going to be hitting some pretty big bumps because I-15 is all torn up.
If you look, the center of the wheel was past the end of the trailer. This worried me a bit, even though it was strapped down very, very well.
So, knowing we had no alternatives, I improvised. I pulled the ramps out a bit and strapped it around the tire. Might not have done a damn thing, but it made me feel better, LOL. It held perfectly for the whole ride too.
And here she is, ready to roll....
The dipstick.... really struggled trying to get a pic that would show the flakes, but you can see them here.
This trailer of my BIL's is badass. I wish it would have worked out, because it pulls like a dream. I am a big fan of the pintle hitch now.
Soooooo.... now I want a diesel. This thing is straight up a monster. Didn't feel a damn thing behind it except some sway in the wind and bumps....

Yikes! Yeah I suppose it did fit but I would be sweatin bullets! Agreed the ramps may have done nothing but it sure as heck would have made me feel better too lol. Glad it all worked out for ya
It pulled like an absolute dream. Didn't budge at all either. Those have a trailer brake on them too, BTW. No electric attachment needed.
Wow, what a hassle! Great idea doing a "dry run" first . Odd that that tilt-bed trailer had a problem, though isn't it? Glad it all worked out in the end. Those surge brakes are surprisingly effective, eh?

I'm confused, why did the truck need to start ? I mean, usually, reason why you have to trailer a vehicle is because it isn't running...a come along is a little over 10 bucks lol. I would of used the tilt hands down. Hell, that truck is all of 19'. Gutsy. Regardless, glad you got it home...wow , what a way to go. Your crazy white, but It worked!
I picked a mini van up once that wasn't running in a church parking lot. Had to use a cheap HF come a long to pull it up hill and onto the trailer to load it. It was a little cranking, -wasn't bad and got a little work -out lol. Depending on the tilt, I might of brought along some planks. Mentioned the come-along earlier as well, been there done that. So yea, a little confused that you didn't go that route. The UH ramps definitely did help because of the way you tied it down. I would of been nervous without them lol. Well, you proved Uhaul is indeed doable and they'll rent their trailer for anything. That surprised me as well, Uhaul has rules and regs, they want to know what your pulling and what with. This definitely goes against. Like I said, glad it worked out man...what a fiasco ehh lol.
Big fail, - I can not get this clean enough for ground, need to get a grinding wheel in there. Barley get an arch lol.
Rust is rooted in..I have enough room for the torch. I can usually get away with what I have on hand, - flex shaft and attachments but the stuff is too big to get the correct angles. I also have a dremel, haven't used it or it's attachments. I don't have a flex shaft for the dreme so that I can use it's attatchments. Any of you guys use a Dremel flex shaft w grinding attachments ? Would it be strong enough ? Going to pick up a coarse wire broom attachment for my heavy flex shaft, try that. Wonder if a needle scalier would get in there ? Just can't get in there to prep for weld...goofy angles. Going try the big box stores , see what they have on the shelf in a little bit.
Oh hey, that header bolt in the pick is removed. Have a fresh bolt for it , that's my ground.... having probs cleaning/ grinding the surface/work area.
It's also rusted and thinned across the top, what you see in the pick is the extent of the break. I poked around the bottom of the primary above the starter. The metal hasn't thinned. I mean I can't run an awl through it tapping it with a hammer. So , it rusted/corroded, thinned just on top, what you see in the pic. This makes it worth the effort, just have to get the area clean enough. Wish I could blast it, that would make quick work of it...won't work.

Danm White, that Chevy looks like an animal lol.
I just wanted to start it to drive it up on the trailer. It has some serious problems.... so we decided to pull it home. It is also missing, but I am 99% sure that this is due to the fact he stripped out the bolt that holds cylinder one's coil in. So, it bounces. I want to cut the oil filter open and see just how bad it is.
I know it appears I was chancing it a bit with the trailer, but it was on there really good. Strapped 3 times on the front, the axle was double strapped, and had a safety chain. The ramps getting extended were quite possibly ineffective because of that. Besides, Uhaul knew what was going on it, and approved it. They asked what was sitting on it, and what was pulling it before they would even rent it.
The come along would have happened if it didn't start. The motor is toast either way... but starting it just made it easier.

Yeah, the surge brakes are pretty interesting.... not too sure why you don't see that more often. The tilt bed is made for a bobcat or a backhoe.... as soon as the truck hit a certain spot, the hydraulic started coming down. Wish it would have been adjustable.....
