I actually started work today on the 04 Expy 5.4 I have for lil Red. I dropped the oil, oil pan, screen and checked the bearings. I was correct in #3 and #7 being where the noise came from. The journal was clean and not scarred, but both bearings were into the copper. Just this journal pair. Nothing else was the least bit marked. The other bearing looked like new.

I'm going up again tomorrow and bringing my mic, so I'm going to get the new bearing for that journal. The others were STD, and one at 001 (factory). The ones that wore out were in the 001 size. This is what I remember when I was doing warranty. This was the weak area of the crank that I mentioned at the start of this thread. Oh well, it was getting bearing anyways, I just hoped they would all be the same size. Something tells me I'll be going with an 002 bearing or replacing the crank. I'm hoping it didn't damage the crank, but I'll see tomorrow.

I really like the improved guide system Ford put on the later 2Vs. Everything is really tight and the improved guides are like new. I am definitely replacing the oil pump with a new one. I don't trust it after seeing those 2 bearings. I'll also replace the intake gaskets (Ford gaskets) while I have it out, and replace the frt and rear seals while its out.

The other day I pulled the cover on the rear differential that lil Red had in him originally, and found nothing wrong with it. I was sure it was only the transmission (not the rear as the PO said), and it was. Anyways, it's a H9, 9.75 3.55 LS with 12mm studs. Perfect for my blue 98. This way I discard the ld 8.8 and get the heavier axle assembly. I only have to change the right side e-brake cable to the 139 inch wb one. Mine came out of a 120 wb truck, so the longer cable is necessary. Simple fix. Order it now, replace it in the spring. Why not. Works for me.

Ak, did Ford ever address the bearing issue?- or did it carry through into the 3v's?
Do you think the one under bearing was from the factory or a later fix?
There is a couple of 11gen's down here that the owners are selling on craigslist, one needs a head gasket, the other, has a rod knock- asking price is still too high imo, but if you could jew them down a little, they might be worth fixing.

Bear.....you know I really don't know if they did. I know there was a Class Action Suit on the 5.4 2V but don't know what ever came of it. The 3V's have their own CAS pending so again, I don't know what was their main issue to get a CAS started.

When I was in Ford warranty, I had a bunch of cranks in the 97=99 trucks that we either replaced or short blocked. Then Ford wouldn't allow more cranks without a Zone Rep authorizing the action. I left that job a few months later, and never did find out what Ford did to correct the problem.

As far as a 001 bearing, I've seen that way too often. GM is by far the worst in doing this. Oversize(undersized) bearing, pistons, cylinder bore and the list goes on with GM. That was where I went after Ford, and although I loved the job, I hate their products. By far, Ford was the better of the manufacturers, and best in warranty. GM warranty just totally sucked int he 80-90's and early 00's. Then I broke 4 back verts, and that was it for me doing those kinds of jobs.

And no worries white...that's just called being "dense". I don't think it was done intentionally..not by the user in question anyway.

LOL, probably not Brew.... you're right.

I don't do well when I try to help someone that doesn't listen though.... hahaha. I train people how to do things at work, and I REALLY get bothered when they don't listen. I usually give them three times, and then they've struck out with me.

The thing that's bothered me the most is this airbag recall - which affected a broad spectrum of vehicles. AFAIK, to date, there were no Ford's involved on the Takata recall. Ford and Mazda are fighting a recent Takata one though because they used a different propellant than other manufacturers. My Father just barely got the recall for his BMW last week. And my Toyota just got the recall in August. Just seems like a REALLY long time to have these things still out on the road.

Hey guys....I in need of the drivers side windshield wiper cowl panel. The black plastic piece on the drivers side, held in by a few phillips screws. The ones I've found, are mostly broken in one or more of the slats, so I would like to find one. If anyone is going to the pick and pull parts, maybe someone could find one, that doesn't break the bank. lol

Here is a picture of what I need. The bottom piece in the picture. Thanks in advance.

If it doesn't snow, I am going to most likely go to the yard on Wednesday. I will look for one.

Dumb question.... but they are all the same, 97-03, right?

Surprised you have a 2 piece. My 98 is a one piece. The last time I had it out was to fix the windshield leak. Actually turned out to be cab overlap leaks on both sides. Drivers side was leaking very close to the GEM. Anyway half of those cowl fasteners were no good, the cowl itself had a crack, but not bad. Took some time but I found new fasteners at clips and fasteners (.com). So if you by chance have any broken, you can get them there.
