It was a really big problem on the 3.0 Vulcan V6 Taurus. I replaced two covers on those for the exact same reason on both cars. Top left port was crumbling they were pitted so bad.

EDIT: Pic add...

It was easier just to buy a new one.... Also used Permatex number 2 on it. That's all I use for timing covers and other coolant related repairs.

They were pretty bad! Not sure if the Ranger 3.0 had the same issue, but the Taurus sure did.

Our Calif water near SF is mainly from Hetch Hetchy and is great! But I use distilled. Local mechs have never heard of using distilled. Oddly, pharmacy after pharmacy increasingly has had none over the last 4-5 years. Smart 'n Final discount grocery is my only found source now. Convenient 6-pack for us.* Cheap. I use one-up with a lengthy casual Prestone acetic acic gentle flush. I'll RINSE w tap water. I do remove the block plug, carefully.

EDIT: Wife uses a CPAP, but I meant for US who refill a block with flush, no antifreeze, yet, (and then after 2-3 gals.does it.)
And w increasing regularity, even.low maint batteries need very little, in my mild climate. The CPAP maybe uses 1-2 gals/month. Buying 2 bottles endlessly ends up being less nuisance to storing a few extra. $1.29?

It occurred after the first coolant service. Didn't do it right. Fortunately flushing the block free from contaminants fixed the issue. Lesson learned, iron/calcium fortified well water will compromise the cooling system.

I get a kick out of Amazon thinking I'd still have the laundry detergent that I bought from them 5 months ago.

Thanks for the plug, Brew! Much appreciated.

I have a few I cut opened that just need some more film time. Literally ZERO difference between a couple of Fram's different filters. Just a can color change is all I see.

EDIT: Also, I am 99.9% sure this is made by Wix. IMO, this was the best bang-for-your-buck filter that I opened.

Well, this math don't add up....

How did this one stack up, Whitey? Recommended? (The 820S' are finally going back to WM this afternoon.)

For the money, that's the best filter that I opened up. I'm thinking that will be my next go to. I opened a K&N too, and I'd take the Purolator over that.

That's pretty sad.

I'd really like to see something on how much real-world benefit there is between, say, the Tech filter and the Boss filter. "More filtration is always better," but where is the point of diminishing returns?
