Thinking
What did your cluster come out of, AK? I wonder if the E4OD and 4R70W provided a different signal, and the trans and cluster need to match?
I know the 4R70W signal changed at some point, but I think it was post-Gen 10 trucks (like 2007).
EDIT: Thanks for the info on Neapco. Forgot about them.... I knew that at one point, but my brain only holds so much for so long, LOL.

No White, the clusters are the same. I'm going under Red in a few minutes to check the VSS. Remember, I didn't install this transmission, so who know what is unplugged or whatever yet. I'll post up in a while what i find. I'm just at a loss, since I showed the gearing in the speedometer and how that works. According to the bottom wheel, they are in-sync. I checked everything before I reinstalled it. I just can't figure out how one piece can turn and NOT the other.
Also, you would think that it would shift erratically, but it shifts right on shift points. Nice clean firm shifts, no slippage, firm OD lock in. That means that PCM is seeing a signal and telling the transmission it's okay to shift. I think I'm going directly for the VSS.
I just had a brain cramp. Maybe it has a magnetic plus inside the roller that tells it to turn or not. That is about all I can think of. Think of it as a pulse signal like a distributor pick up coil. Hmmm. I have no idea. YET!

Damn, am I that far off lol. I might be. Now I'm going to have to see what that thing on the differential is. The VSS if I'm calling it right is towards the top of trans by the transfer case. left side.
That said, I did change the rear axle, I wonder if the rear ABS signal is wrong and incorporated with the VSS to the PCM. I've got the other rear end still, so I'll pull that sensor and check it vs what came with the 2002 axle.
Guess what? Two different rear axle sensors. I just changed the one out in the rear with the old one. Road test time. It goes 97-00 for one and then 01-04H for another. Total different signal values.
According to the workshop manual, that would be the first link in the check in the 97-98's. I just put it on, but haven't got to drive it yet. I will say, I believe I found the problem, but still don't understand how the hell it works.
Only the E40D has the 2 sensors. They work in tandem with the rear axle reluctor ring. I followed the signal and got very erratic responses from the rear. I changed it with the originals and got a steady signal.

Huh, yea I vaguely recalled something about having two. Very vague, didn't know if it was my imagination or not....yea that vague lol. Then remembered seeing that gizmo on the diff at some point. You said something about the E4OD's only having this, I recall that from the past as well. Long time ago at another site and confusing discussion. Guess you got to the bottom of it quick...this I'll remember. Well, maybe.
You going for a drive?
