I am thinking it is a u-joint or pinion bearing, just based off the few miles I drove it.
My money's on a U-joint. Monopoly money that is. Lol. But I bet that's definitely a U-joint causing that. Sounds like the needle bearings are toast lol.

Brew.... are the factory joints Spicers? Any reason I should not use Precision again? They are Lifetime.... so I can fix it for free, LOL.

I was thinking the same deal Cman.... needle bearings. I noticed a slight chirp when I was backing up the other day, and I told my Wife that I bet the u-joint is taking a turn for the worst.

Heck iduno, AK might. What about your hangers, crap I asked you twice now, in another thread as well. Do you not know what I mean or something ? Anyway, at one point you were talking about them....in the other thread and I asked if your drivers side had a hole in the gusset yet. You changed the subject lol. Lol, just curious since your truck is close to the same year.

Yeah.... I saw that. Forgot to answer, lol. I will look at the hangers tonight. Moving keeps getting in the way of stuff like that. Makes me post swear words too.

Sorry Brew. I guess I thought you were asking something else.

I went out this morning and checked both of my 98's and the brackets are still solid and nothing other than some surface rust on lil Red's. Blues are almost like new in comparison. He's like a new truck underneath. Very clean for a 98.

Last fall I changed the rear end in Red, if you remember, and I remember looking at everything then, and was surprised to find they were solid. I did find a seam that was trying to rust, but that was quickly stopped with Permatex Extend. I looked at it yesterday when I was under Red, and it was fine and no comeback. I've always had great luck with that stuff.

I've got one for you guys. E40D transmission, VSS system. My odometer does not work, speedometer does not work, trip meter works great. Gears are fine, everything, according to the fitment and layout is fine. How can the trip meter work, and not the speedo and odometer? Does this on 2 heads, no difference.

This particular problem does not show up on any site. It's either they work together or they don't work, or the trip has a problem. I'm leaning on it being in the VSS, but still can't fathom how part can work and not the rest.

Anybody seen this problem before? I talked to a buddy down at Ford and he's never seen it, but has run into VSS problems that are very strange, since so much runs thru it. He can't figure out how the signal would only turn one part and miss the other when it is all meshed together!

I was actually, I just asked white lol. Yea, I figured yours would be good since Alaska doesn't use that acid salt on the roads there. Wish MI would get their act together on that. It really sucks, I fought the salt for years here and still lost. But man, I've also seen a lot of gen 11 trucks that's rusted much worse...beds and tailgates are shot. So I guess I prevailed in some ways lol.

Iduno, there might be two ? Think there is. I know for sure we have the one on the transmission itself, I've played with that one long ago. BUT, - I believe we also have another on the rear axle. That one I haven't played with yet. Yea, I think there's two AK.

If not, the one on the trans might be double geared. If that's the case...only part of that assembly could of failed.

Oh, the answer for the manufacturer of Ford's U joints, they are made by Neapco. Drivelines also.

Thanks Brew. I'll go under there today and meter out the lines and figure out what's going on.

I edited, from what I vaguely recall, the assembly, VSS or whatnot on the trans looked like it may be double geared. I don't remember it that well. It's either or I expect without looking it up. If you got no where researching, I'm not even going to try lol.
