There nothing is at the outer ends of the axle shaft end. That is where the axle is allowed to flex so it doesnt have bend. By being loose it lets the axle move about some, but the stub axle takes the stress at the end. Basically it is supported by the inner gears and the outer knuckle. Nothing like todays sealed up units.

As a matter of fact I do. The snow plows finally made it down the side streets and that same oil lines the street where the melted snow and ice lines the curbs.
Warching it snow today. I decided to take Red on a 4x4 run to make sure everything was right. I had a GEM being slow to engage, but after using it a few times, it works fine now. I took him up to 4000 feet line. I'm at 320 ft above sea level. where I am. I also saw an F150 with a Fisher blade on it. It actually didn't look too bad;
