No, I thought maybe Ford went back to VSS too... but all of my documentation says VSS was completely eliminated in the 99 model year on all F-Series.

I went through my VSS PDF below.... currently going through the Auto Trans PDF.... trying to figure it out.

I think we were both on the right track, Ohio..... I believe this may be it..... the OSS (Output Speed Sensor). Makes perfect sense based on his description of the location, and he told me that he thinks it is only two wires. I don't know how it makes the engine miss at idle, and play with the timing though.... I need to dig deeper here.

LOL.... was that in response to the original post? Yeah.... he bought it quite a while ago, APDL. He's got her all shiny and a new motor too. Sexy as hell.

Ohio, there is also a turbine speed sensor on it.... I think it is probably one of these two connectors that he needs. I am guessing the more expensive one, because he also told me it resembles the O2 connector.

EDIT: Nope.... this ***** right here is it. Just figured it out. I found a pic he sent me back in June of it.

So, that 05 3V that I helped my Buddy put in his truck.... it has a weird issue, that I have not been over to his house yet to look at. It has, what he calls a sensor, on the trans that when it is unplugged cause the engine to miss and run like garbage. It is a part of the harness that he broke when he pulled the trans, and so the connector doesn't stay attached. It will fall off when he is driving.

Do any of you know what the hell this could be? I asked him for a pic, but he's in the hospital right now.... so I was trying to try and think this through. Doesn't make sense to me unless it's using a common power/ground with the injector or ignition harness.
I know that, well, here's how it works, -MAF-TPS- TRANS. If any of those sensors aren't jiving it will affect drivability. The engine can't run correctly.

Yea, they work in that order as well, like 1-2-3 repeat...just those 3 .

What threw me off is that it misses at idle too. I kept thinking that if it was acting up while it was not moving, it would not be a speed sensor....

I'll have to ask him if it affected the speedometer at all.

I don't think it matters, they all have to signal or report something, stationary or drivecycle. Those three work together. At least with the gen 10's they do.

Brew, with the way it is running, it must be retarding the timing when it's unplugged, you think?

If this tour comes through SLC, I'm going!

Or it could be opening the EGR valve. Try disconnecting vac from the EGR when you get over there. The EGR is set to open at cruising speeds, if that sensor on the trans is messed up....

Damn that be an excellent 3 banger! All 3 jam!
