I did mine today, very happy with the whole thing. I didn't unhook the battery to reset the computer, wondering if I should. I read the whole thread some do, some don't, any one know for sure if it's better one way or the other?

I've seen people say that the MAF sensor will adapt after a while, but I figured unhooking the battery couldn't hurt. I'd say do it, but that's just my $.02

got bored and did this today kinda a pain sanding it down. didn't notice to much other than rpm's stayed lower than normal on the way to work, so who knows may be a little increase in gas mileage.

My 2006 SCREW 5.4 has the filter on top of the intake. Can this still be done at the fender and will it make any difference in performance?

Yes it can be done easily, I have some pictures of mine a few pages up, and in my albums. I noticed the RPMs fell to about 550, I noticed a slight power increase and smoother acceleration, but I did mine all at the same time I had bigger tires and an aftermarket muffler installed and my mpg is about the same as it was with the old tires, just a tad worse actually.

all you need is 3" pvc pipe (i used 11" of pipe) and a 3" pipe connector. oh and a belt sander made sanding the side that went in the fender a little faster
here are some pics of mine
