Ford has a specific fluid for transfer cases. It's not trans fluid. If it was my truck, I'd drain it and put in the correct stuff. And no, I wouldn't mix Mercon IV and Mercon V.
I hope I'm not reigniting this argument again, but reading through the threads there was huge debates about lv vs xl-12 and the last official thing I saw was that lv works and is recommended as per Ford, but xl-12 is also considered good.. That's why I eventually decided to go with it.
Also checked with the local dealership and they confirmed just now that both work fine.

Where does that reference transfer cases? I see transmissions and the recommendation for mercon V in the tranny, which is fine. I'm just trying to figure out why LV isn't good for the transfer case when I've had multiple sources who've said it is, both official and unofficial.

Whoops. Thought you were talking transmissions. I can tell you I used LV in mine when I did all the fluids after purchase, but I can't say why. I must've read it somewhere, too, or I wouldn't have used it.

No worries...glad you came in with references though...it's how questions like these should be answered. In that link it even shows the debate that exists within Ford itself on the subject.
Ford themselves said do not use LV in a transfer case. Ford Tech Makuloco did a video on it as well.
That said, some people say it was reformulated to be used in a transfer case. In fact, XL-12 is no longer sold. You may find it listed on Amazon, Rock Auto etc.,but youll get LV if you order it. I say screw that, not worth the risk. Valvoline still makes the XL-12 equivalent, simply called Transfer Case Fluid.
I ordered XL-12 from RA and got LV. I used the LV in the 6F35 in my Escape instead. I put Mercon/Dex III in there instead.
