Here's a pretty random question for you thinkers, why is the 347ci SBF popular as a crate engine? If you are going to remove the engine and buy a new one, why not go with a 351w or 408w? They fit in the same hole, make more power, bolt up to the same accessories, trans etc. I mean if you already had a 302 I can see putting a stroker kit in it. But if you are starting from scratch why not go bigger? Like shown below, how else are you gonna get 35HP more for just $220 bucks more? Is there some negative to the 351w based engine I'm missing?

On some chassis the higher deck height just creates fitment issues.
Like to a brake booster. Or headers. Or the AC plastic boxes.

I would get the cubic inches if the space is there.
In a F series there will not be space issues with the tall block.

Accessories brackets are different. Intakes are different. Distributors are different. The 351 based motors are taller and wider (8.2 deck height vs. 9.5).

To use 302 heads on a 351, you have to enlarge the holes from 7/16 to 1/2.

The 351 is a better and stronger motor, but those are the things people consider.

I am officially starting my "part time job" today. I'm not sure if I ever mentioned this before.... so sorry if so. Anyway, I am on salary, so any extra hours I work doing IT is basically on my own dime. I approached management about spending a couple of hours here and there down in my old department that I ran - and they'll pay me for that hourly as "bonus pay". It'll help fund some of my projects, etc.

This $4!t is getting expensive, lol. Hopefully some day YT will be my part time job.

Thanks, I didn't realize there were that many differences. I appreciate the info. Is it similar with 4.6 to 5.4?

If you are asking about similarities between the 302 / 351 small blocks and the modular 4.6 / 5.4, nothing interchanges.
the trans pattern is different, everything is different.

The 4.6 and 5.4 are very similar with a different deck height.
The intake manifolds are different but the heads interchange.
Exhaust manifolds fit between engines but are slightly different at times.
a lot of parts interchange, like water pumps, etc.

Yeah, fairly similar to those two by comparison - deck height and intakes, etc.

The 351 has bigger mains. The bottom of the block is the same in where the motor mounts are located. But a 351 sits a little lower than a 302. I'll need to do a sway bar drop when I put the 351 in my 88.

The oil pans are also wider on a 351.... oil pump is different and a 5/16" shaft vs 1/4" on the 302 also.

I had assumed they were a direct swap for each other with one just being a little taller than the other, being that they are both considered Windsor small blocks. I'm happy I was able to come here and get a great answer without getting flamed. Thank you Thinkers.
