Thinking
I can give a bit of experience on a BMW.
My mom had to keep up with friends and bought a ~2005 3 series. Traded a 99 Mustang GT convertible for it.
While it was under warranty it was often in the shop and every time was days to a couple weeks. They never seemed to have the correct parts for the most popular model BMW sold at that time. They did give her another car for the shop time. Every warranty somehow cost quite a bit at pickup.
After warranty was over, it cost a lot every year to keep the check engine light off.
Dad got tired of the little cars s**t. he called me one day as it had a miss and BMW wanted over $300 to swap a coil. He asked if I could get one changed for less. I found one online for less than $100 and swapped it in like 10 minutes. He was much happier.
At some point the battery failed. He told me BMW dealer wanted over $1200 for a battery, installed. He said the damn thing could sit before he paid that. Wanted me to know if I could change it.
BMW put a freaking computer in the battery and once installed it had to be VIN programmed to the car with proprietary software that I couldn't find any aftermarket shops that could work it.
He let that car sit (he jumped it whenever he wanted to move it) till he and my mom both passed away. It probably helped his decision that he felt mom was a bad driver (which she was).
In early 2020 after my mom died, my sister (executor of will) had the thing towed to BMW dealer and was told it would be ~10K to get it running again. It had sit in a garage with a cover over it for 9 years. It looked beautiful, it was over-complicated crap.
She sold it for 5K and used the money for other stuff.
Maybe it was all a bad dealer but I don't think so.
Run from cars that call Deutschland home (and I'm third generation German).
Also, white, I hope your kids are alright. You seem to be getting all the bad things happening health wise to you and yours lately. Gesundheit.

EDIT - yep, same set - just 28 dollars cheaper.

Paul's Wife just posted a video of them getting in the FJ at the winter jamboree. Sure looks like they are fixin' to drive it. He must have got it done. Matt posted pics, but nothing that had Paul in it.
Last I heard, the trans was screwed up in the Yota.

I had a '94 325is for a while. Damn thing bled me dry. The water pump went out, I had to tear the whole front end off the thing to get to it and the pump was $264 by itself. There was nothing special about it but the BMW tax. It always needed something. A soon as I fixed 1 thing, something else would break. When the dashboard started going out randomly, I traded it in. Best decision I ever made was to get out from under that thing even if I had to deal with a car dealer to do it. BMW = Bring More Washingtons although it should be Franklins.
