I guarantee its the solenoid , I have had the problem a few times and just one jammed one will send all the codes. I even keep a spare solenoid

Well guys, I want to thank the people who responded here. I swapped the solenoids but an hour ago, and the truck runs like brand new with 0 codes (much better than 16!).

I drove it around a bit, but so far so good. I was going to take a HUGE bath on this thing otherwise. If digital beers were a thing, i'd be buying a ton.

To the people who have done this fix, how long have you been running with this fix? My solenoids did not look very gunky or discolored at all compared to a lot of the photos I have seen.

Should I still be concerned about doing cam phasers, tensioners, etc in the near future after this episode? Should I still consider getting rid of the truck?

Thanks again. You made my entire month guys!!!

Personally I had to change mine once a year , keep your receipt as ford gives you a one year warrantee on it ! All sounds seem to go away for a few days an then slowly come back in my case. First time I did it I thought I fixes everything. You will have to do phasers and stuff an when you do , as you see from my other posts I recommend installing the lock outs!!!!!

I had to drive the truck home while it was in full on misfire mode, so I am a bit concerned it may have harmed things that may bite me at a later time.

Do you feel the phasers are something someone with basic knowledge of mechanics and the right tools/videos could handle? I am just trying to decide if trading in now that its fixed is still the right decision.

Default It's been a while!

My apology gents, I was in here a year ago with an issue and my choices were to do the repair myself or have a mechanic do it. I went back and forth for several weeks at one point thinking I could tackle it with little issues over a long weekend to getting cold feet and thinking I should just let a professional take care of it. In the end I reluctantly took it to my mechanic. I hated dishing out that much cash (2200), man I hated that, but the guys did great work and had it repaired and running like brand new the next morning.

Turns out I lost a phaser and upon inspection this failed phaser had failed at some point earlier on before I owned the truck and was replaced with a non-oem part. I've kept this part with intentions of posting pictures for nearly a year now!

At any rate, here you go. Hopefully these will help somebody. This thread was a great help to me for sure!

Guys,

Here is a perfect example here of how frustrating these VCT systems can be. I cannot speak for everyone, but I am sure that most people would not care to endlessly replace the VCT components when we offer a permanent solution. Lock out the phasers, load the tune, and from then on no more VCT issues. Sure the solenoids may buy some time, but why continue to repair something that you already know is just going to fail again and again.

Feel free to give us a call if anyone would like more information on our solution to the dreaded , never ending cam phaser issues all 4.6 / 5.4 3 valve engines will experience at some point in their lifetime.

Smile fixed!

Well, I finally tackled the timing job last week during vacation, my truck is running great again, and I saved a couple thousand bucks doing it myself! I ordered the parts last summer and have been putting it off for a year, and I don't think I would have attempted this repair without the tips and info in this thread. The thin gaskets on both of the Ford tensioners had blown out, causing my problem. I can't believe how quiet the truck runs and idles now, throttle response is much better at low rpms as well. Now I just have to fix that annoying ash tray rattle

Dude, come on. Can we go 10 posts without your performance robbing product being plugged?

Show dyno data before and after, or get out

By the way, I'm waiting for my OEM replacement phasers to show up in the mail. Cut me a deal on these things, and I'll drive to your location (I'm in Imlay City, MI) and run my truck on your dyno. Not many people willing to spend 600 bucks on a product that's sure to hinder performance.

No s**t! I have an SCT tuner and can get the lock-outs from Ebay for $40, I'm not even going to ask Liverboys how much they would charge for just the tune file.
