'02 F150 Mods that Get MPG
Hi all, I knew that parts that will generate efficiency and get rid of parasitic losses would get me better mpg, and I found a good mix. I got 19.6 pure highway mileage with the 5.4 engine at around 72 mph average, and I did check my speedo / odo. Mods performed:
- BBK Throttle Body & 0.98v TPS
- BBK Underdrive Pulley Kit
- K&N Cold Air
- Superchips Tune
- Electric Fan Kit Conversion
- '04 Cobra Water Pump
- Removed 2 of 4 cats
- Cat-back exhaust
- All Royal Purple Fluids
- Full tune-up
At 70 mph before mods, I could tell the truck was feeling a little challenged to go faster, but now, at 80, it feels effortless. These were all good mods.

I've been surprised by my mileage on the '18, 5.0. I've put about 1,200 miles on it and right at 22mpg with probably 20% City and 80% highway driving. I assumed having the line-X sprayed and adding the F1 tonneau might drop it just a hair but it's still at the same.
I will say I never speed, stop and start easy, love the stop/start feature, so my driving habits probably maximize my mileage. I was 'hoping' when I bought it I would get 20mpg average so I'm definitely satisfied.

2017 3.5EB 4WD / Super Crew / 3.55 / 157'' wheel base:
All time average after 5000 miles tracked in 7 months using fuelly: 14.7MPG (60% city 40% highway)
MPG Average this winter : 11.75
MPG Average last summer: 16.8
Worst MPG : 9.22 (2 full weeks of -30 to -40f temperatures)
Best MPG : 20.45 (first ride, 95% highway)
Computer MPG has always been 2MPG higher than my real consumption.

Keep in mind if your 22 mpg is what the dash is telling you then it's likely not that in reality. I've never had a car that was accurate with that calculation. I just filled up my 2018 for the first time yesterday and while the dash readout was telling me I got 19.1 mpg, the actual came out to be 17.9 mpg.

I did a test with pictures and posted it on a thread in the newer trucks section. https://www.f150forum.com/f118/my-mp...up-now-410774/
Did you fuelup after each tests to make sure that real consumption was the same as shown on the computer? We can't compare oranges with apple, that thing is a lie-o-meter, trust me! At the end, what matters is how much money comes out of your pocket every time your fuel up, not what's shown on your screen.

Your computer obviously shows great number, but they're not really relevant. I could go on a perfectly flat freeway and run the test for a few miles and would probably get the same numbers, but they wouldn't be relevant at all for me since most of my use is 60% city and 40% highway.

I disagree with your statement about the dash numbers not being relevant, they are to me and to where and how I drive. Of course if you drive in mountains or exclusively in the city then you'll never see numbers like this, that's why everybody does their own calculations.
The purpose of the pictures was not only to show the total MPGs that were achieved but more to show how just 10mph difference can affect the MPGs so dramatically, and that applies to everyone no matter where they drive.
