No experience with magnets. Always carry with one round chambered. Thank you for your service, ChiefD and service personnel.

Get jumped? Doors lock as soon as I sit in truck. If I am sitting at a red light and someone comes up and tries to open the locked door, nothing happens. Secondly if they try to shatter window, I have ceramic tint on the front two, which helps with shattering windows plus they cannot see what I am doing either. They can still get in but takes more effort and more time which gives me time to do what I need to do. Thirdly, if they walk up and just start shooting, it doesn't matter if my gun is loaded or not at that point. The only scenario I see it as being a problem is if I am getting in my truck and someone runs up to me out of the blue. But there again, my gun is in my console so not going to make a difference if it is loaded or not. Let me do me and you do you.

i don't want to get in between the debate.. but when i purchased my first pistol i didn't carry it around for a week until i was comfortable carrying loaded with one in the chamber .. no one can predict what will happen but you should always be one step ahead in my opinion with one already loaded and ready to go. I remember when the owner of a range i used to go to told me i should never carry my stainless steel 1911 and i asked why.. he said because anybody can see that big shiny thing when you pull it out.. you are already at a disadvantage .. i listened and i only carry that gun to the range in a case

you may not like the delivery of Unbroken's message, but he is right in my opinion

Understood. I also have a 3 year old that likes to climb around in my truck. Not going to have a loaded gun in the truck period. He isn't strong enough obviously to pull the gun off the magnet nor pull the trigger but I'm not going to chance it. Now I started another debate I'm sure.

same here.. i have a 3 year old and even though my XDS has grip safety and he probably couldn't fire it properly .. i'm super cautious with it any where near him.. but i'm usually carrying on my body or its in one of my safes

A 1911, while a beautiful gun, is not (IMO) the best gun to carry anyway for self defense. The most glaring reason is the limited number of shots the possibility of a jam and the lack of a serious saftey. I do disagree with what you were told, my 1911 actually hides better than my 12 shot Sig 40!

Lack of a safety on a 1911? There’s a thumb safety, a grip safety and your finger. It takes 3 things to happen before you can fire one. I have carried one for 20 years...although it’s a rather high end custom gun. Failures to feed or fire have been zero through countless thousands of rounds. Maintenance and not buying cheap white box ammo go a long way too.

Yep, lack of safety! Owned and carried mine since 1972, but that really means nothing for either of us. Everyone that owns one knows that the first thing you must do after pulling that weapon is, release the only active safety with your thumb so it will fire if necessary. At that point, the gun is ready to fire! The backup "grip" safety at that point is pressed, its pressed all the time it is in your hand as a matter of fact, so yes the gun will fire.

Most folks, if not the higher percentage folks that have or carry a 1911, IMO, do not take the time to have the barrel polished or make it custom, so yes, if you break your wrist under stress, your gonna have a jam! Yes maintenance is key with any gun as well as ammo. But with that statement, you are making a false assumption!

Good luck!

I’ve see plenty of people limp wrist a 1911 and have it not fire...it happens.
Beginners should probably stick to plastic guns with 7lb triggers. I prefer steel and 2.5lbs.
