Hello! new to the site and looking for some input on this subject. Just replying to this post as i dont know how to start a new one. In any case i have a 2021 f150 lariat, bought it used in sept 2025. I have not been able to turn on auto updates, in the truck or on the app. My online ,Ford account ,where i can view info on my truck ,says SYNC Version 4.0.20301. I have no idea how old this one is and what the current version should read in 2026 as i have never been notified or seen a new download. can anyone advise what version i should have?
thanks

Welcome to the forum. Somebody with some tech knowledge should be able to assist you. Most of the stuff I do is old school.

Sorry, to be the bearer of bad news, but that is the old broken Sync software that prevents updates from coming in. Details to the issue are in the link below:

well thats not good! I did buy the truck from a ford lot, it was not a lease . was told the original owner traded in. looked at the service history and it was well kept. really surprised then that the owner did nothing about not being able to update for 4 years! In any case looked at the thread you sent, way over my paygrade to try and fix. Looks like a trip to my ford service centre ansd see what they have to say!
thanks for the response to my question!
If anyone knows what version of sync 4 i should have on my 2021 f150 it would be appreciated.

Although some appear to be having OTA updates, I am pleasantly surprised to see that mine are working so far on my new 2025 a lot better than my previous 2018. On previous years, I normally had to download to a thumb drive and then manually install it. Today, I went home for lunch and when I came back out to the truck about 45 minutes later, I had a message that software updates were complete. I received update "Software Update 11 - Central Computer ECG2-25-2.85", seems like it is for the Gateway module but I haven't seen any visible changes to functionality.

If anyone knows what version of sync 4 i should have on my 2021 f150 it would be appreciated.
The latest Sync version for a 2021 is 25211. However, that does not mean yours should be on 25211. It all depends on what Ford has available for your VIN. The sync version is decoded as follows 25 (year of release) 211 day ot release. So, 25211 was released by engineers on the 211th day of 2025. You truck is on software from the 301st day of 2020.

It is possible the previous did not know and/or did not care. Depending on the demographic of the previous owner, he or she may not have known the truck had an issue and was supposed to get updates. Who knows? The real problem is that Ford never released a bulletin or recall to dealers for this problem. Therefore, dealers are unaware of the issue and unaware of how to fix it. They only thing they can do is replace the APIM and program it with the newer firmware. Even then your truck will still be super out of date, but at least you can start getting updates so that one day in the distant future, you will be caught up.

For the F150, 2021 was the first year of Sync 4 and the first year they were sent OTA updates. 2020 and below on Sync 3 allowed you to update only the APIM with files you could download directly from Ford. In the case of 2021+, you cannot do that any more.

For those with PTS access, I'm just curious, is there a known lag between an OTA being installed and that update disappearing from the "Update Sequence" table? I'm presuming there is... this is Ford we're talking about!

I was surprised to see anything on the OTA dashboard for my '21 since the rear camera OTA update was the last one and even further back for any other updates. Anywho, went for a drive tonight and the Sync 25.2.1.6.5.2 (APIM) update installed happily. Really thought they'd forgotten about us '21 folks and I'd only get updates via the FDRS route when I had the time.

The whole update sequence thing that was recently added is something is very new, so very possible there is a lag between the time you get an OTA and it reflects in that section. There shouldn't be, but like you said, Ford is gonna Ford.

thankyou for all the info you have given me!
next step is to stop in to my ford service and talk to them about it. Do you have a guess on what the average cost would be for them to replace the APIM?
