Upgrading SYNC to SYNC 3
#73
Can anyone comment on the antenna splitter and antenna details for a 2015? The original antenna will not work with a splitter since it only has sirius and no GPS signal, so people have been sticking the aftermarket farka under the dash. Would be cool to have it done right with the OEM splitter and antenna.
Looks like the splitter is GL3Z-10E928-AA and the antenna is HL3Z-10E893-AA. However, I did not yet see confirmation from anyone that successfully installed it.
And, we want the non-intended SA or SB screen in order to not have to modify the brackets?

Yes you want the SB screen if you dont want to mod brackets, but the SC screens are way better and preferred. I run SC's almost exclusively.

Yes, I understand it does not work with just the splitter on a 15. But I posted the splitter and antenna number above, wondering if anyone has confirmed success with it...

Yes the line is still there. A couple of guys running 2015s upgraded the IPMB as part of the PTBA upgrade and the line went away or just didnt show (one upgraded sync 3 at the same time he did PBTA, line never showed up). Sadly you cant upgrade the module, you have to replace it. And program it.

For those of you that have done this, is it really worth it? I actually don’t mind Sync 2 at all, but was somewhat intrigued by car play. The price of this all seems pretty outrageous to me as I can’t think of any real tangible benefit. I’d be curious to get the opinion of those that have made the change, and hear what you like best about it after making the switch.

I like the sync 3 interface a little more and I ended up getting a dongle to run Forscan and I have made a few adjustments to my truck that I probably wouldnt have bothered with if I hadnt gotten into the sync 3 upgrade rabbithole.
Carplay isnt awesome, but it is a good way to "add" navigation. I only have a few carplay optimized apps but those are easier to use on the head unit vs the phone.
That said, since the Waze and Sync 3.0 updates I find myself using the Ford interface for apps, music, etc. and Waze for navigation. it isnt perfect but I can have Waze on my headunit and have my phone playing music at the same time on trips. handsfree calling and texting still work with siri as well. I have actually turned off carplay for the time being. with the ford applink, waze, siri and having text messages unlocked (see Forscan) I am pretty happy with it as a package.
So yes, for me, it was worth the upgrade but not necessarily for carplay at this time.
I'll add that guys like TexasFording and Livnitup have been invaluable in the process.
