Upgrading SYNC to SYNC 3
All,
First post, but I wanted to document what I did in case it helps others. I just performed a Sync 2 to 3 Upgrade 2015 on my F150 Platinum 502A. Sorry, I did not take pictures.
Parts List ($326.37 total - tried to get everything under $300 but got tired of waiting):
I'm not going to put install steps here, as there's a bunch of resources for that and it wasn't hard to be honest. Unbolt and unscrew some stuff, pry trim off, be careful not to break things.
With that said, since the USB hub I purchased came from China, I had to wait a bit for it. I had everything else put together, so I just pried up the USB hub itself with everything else intact to replace it. This wasn't really fun, I felt like I was going to break things. This would have been much easier if I was able to push from the back when I had everything above it pulled apart.
I guess I should also mention that right behind where the center speaker is mounted, there was a black box of sorts under all the trim. That's where I ended up sticking my GPS antenna, and I've had good luck with it there so far (though thought it was bad when I had a strange GPS issue mentioned below).
Configuration Notes:
$3-400 bucks is a lot to spend, but it's really nice having the newer look and android auto, I'm too much of a cheap bastard to be able to spend the money I've seen some folks spend on this. Though being honest, the amount of time I put in digging into things and configuring this, it probably would have been worth the $1-200 extra that I would have spent on a full pre-configured kit from ebay.
The only issue I have now is a strange line above the 360 camera when I back up. Plus the fact that my truck is Canadian, and I have to hit OK to change the digital speedometer from KM to MPH, but that has nothing at all to do with the sync 3 upgrade.
Thank you to everyone that posts something helpful on this forum, I'm sure I would never have attempted this without being able to lurk around on here to gain knowledge.

Parts List ($326.37 total - tried to get everything under $300 but got tired of waiting):
- APIM w/ Navigation ($125+22 shipping = $147)
- JR3T-14G371-CHA
- Did a bunch of reading to identify that if there is a C in the last 3 of the APIM model number, it should have navigation. Found this, looked up the vin number, saw that it had navigation to be sure. Also, it was not a 2020+ model, which it seems there is some issues with when updating to Sync 3.4.
- Sync 3 Display ($100)
- KP5T-18B955-SA
- Looked to be in great condition, figured it said new so i could get a refund if something was bad on it. Definitely seemed new when I unpackaged it.
- USB Hub ($37.71+3.53 shipping = $41.24)
- LB5T-14F014-CA
- Chose this because it appeared to be the size of my current hub so I wouldn't need any adapter (would have resold and purchased something else if I did), and because it had USB-C.
-
($9.99)
- Cheap, and reviews said others did the sync 3 upgrade with it.
- Note: Does not come with anything to adhere it anywhere. I had some 3M double sided tape I used for other vehicle stuff, so didn't need an extra purchase.
-
($15)
- Liked the fact that this one had an image to tell you which adapter to purchase based on model/year.
-
($0 as I returned it)
- Same brand as the power adapter, returned because the APIM I purchased came with it so I did not need it.
-
($13.14)
- Purchased this because i also needed some clips for my wife's car, so spent an extra 5 bucks. Could have just used other things I had around, but I'm happy I did these as to not damage anything.

Configuration Notes:
- APIM
- The APIM was from something else entirely, so of course I had to do some programming (FORScan is amazing). Everything was crap for a while and I was having a hard time (climate didn't work, etc.). Then I decided just to download my as built from https://www.motorcraftservice.com/AsBuilt, reload it into the new APIM and go from there. I did some other config from there to add things (Thank you @Livnitup for this wonderful document https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...uhb3RTMVz95730).
- After I did this, the map worked but the navigation was super weird, moving me much further than I was actually moving. That this is based on speed/direction instead of just GPS confuses me. Anyway, I changed 7D0-03-01 *xxx xxxx xx-- from 2 (40ms, sync 2 default) to 0 (20ms, sync 3 default) and this fixed my issue. I'd love to give credit to whoever pointed that out in this forum somewhere, but I've lost the post.
- Sync 3.4 Upgrade
- Watched the video and created a USB stick with the upgrade.
- Note: This took a long time. It could be that I was using a super old 32g USB stick that is probably slow. I did have tons of map files to update.
- Stuck the USB into the USB hub (this was even before I updated the hub) and started the truck. Let it run for a bit, then complain that files were not found where I freaked out for a moment and sucked down some nicotine. Unplugged and replugged the USB, and it started working OK. This took a bit too, but not as long as creating the USB stick itself.
