wanting to upgrade from sync 3 v1 to the latest and greatest. Can you help please?

I have sync but I don’t have the capability to use apple car play because I am on version sync 3 ver 1. I tried to update via USB but it never would read it. Do I need to update the USB hub like I have seen?
