Adding Front Camera to XLT
Here is the official plan from Rostra, as given to me by their engineer.
There will be two different hardware modules:
1) the first module is for Sync 3 software v.2.1 and below vehicles that cannot be updated or the owners don't want to pay for the new USB hub from Ford to be compatible w.2.2. Rostra will offer a v2.1 and below updated module.
2) the second module is for Sync 3 software v.2.2 vehicles. This will be a new module. People that have an issue with the old module will need to see their dealer to arrange a module swap. Rostra will ship the new modules to the selling dealer and they will return the old ones to Rostra for credit.
Rostra expects to have the new hardware available by July 1, at the latest for all versions.
Rostra will only guarantee that these will work with vehicles running Officially released (for their vehicle) Sync 3 firmware. Various versions of firmware can be found on different sites. Some for navigation enabled APIM modules and some for non-nav enabled APIM modules. With this number of varied "editions" of code, Rostra cannot guarantee compatibility with each. As explained from the engineer, "I am sure in most cases the update goes OK, but we just cannot work with the possibilities that using firmware not specifically for a particular vehicle will work with the modules."
Let me express the level of commitment that Rostra has to make their products right. I had the same level of frustration as each of you but have seen the light at the end of the tunnel with the current module that I am using. (a.k.a. - super top-secret second version module for v.2.2) The engineer and his team have spent many hours/days testing this new module and I can confirm that it works very well.
I am sure I cannot answer all your questions nor ease your frustrations but let me assure you that a solution has been found and is in the pipeline to help you. Does it offer you an immediate solution to your problems, no, but at least they have a solution and will be available.
Keep in mind, the difference between firmware v.2.1 and below are v.2.2 are great and due to the level of changes in this code, Rostra has had to pivot and develop the new module.
Hope this helps and thanks to everyone, not only on this thread, but the entire F150forum for their knowledge, testing, and adventurous spirit to make our trucks better than factory and more suitable for our own lives.

For me it's another hassle of making arrangements to get my vehicle in to have ANOTHER CO$TLY so called FIX!!!!!
It really is easy. A 7mm socket with extensions is about all you need, especially when just changing the module. Might depend upon where the installer placed the module, but essentially, you will be unplugging the connections and reconnecting to the new module. Took me less than 10 min. Start to finish.

I would do anything to help test this. I've used ForScan in well over a hundred different F150's now and I'm tech-junkie (slot machine technician) by trade. If I were to have my friend who owns an truck lighting retrofit store become a Rostra distributor would there be a valid path towards jumping onboard this trial train?
