No, that was just me about the Valvoline. Well, there was one other person that said the stuff was corked as well. My experience was using the stuff in the 98 last spring. The rear end in the 98 was getting bad (loud, like the bearings were out of round and chewing into the axles) before trying the valvoline. I swapped the fluid using the valvoline since it was a very good price and haven't heard of issues in the past with their formulation. Well, the valvoline made it twice as bad...X2. Now it's loud as hell lol. I'll only use Mobile 1, DP or Amsoil from here on out. Granted, the rear was getting bad, but new gear oil shouldn't have made that much worse.
I do have the 5.4 and it is the 9.75. Maybe I'm just missing something but there was no spring in the carrier or loose in the pumpkin. I went back a few pages and found your testimony and decided to go with Royal Purple. It was about twice as much as the valvoline but I'm thinking it should last a while longer.

Hmmm, I did not know that. The pumpkin tags read that it was an ls unit but i guess I'm not 100% on internal I'd. Can you tell by the picture if its ls or open?

Can you see clutches in it? Best way to tell.

It still works without the spring, just not as well. Some guys don't put it back in because it's a PITA to put in. Some like it to slip more for some reason. Its somewhat common in slalom racing Fox Body's to leave them out.

I thought I could but the lack of a spring threw me. If its ls and I jack up the rear end and turn the tires should they go the same direction or opposite?

The same direction. Opposite is open.

Ok good deal. There is only one s-spring right? It started raining on me so I couldn't jack it up and spin the diff over. I had to cover it all up and shield it in a hurry. Hopefully I just jumped the gun.

Yes, it's all one piece. Here's a good video (bottom) on an easy way to get the spring in.... easiest method I've seen. Also, I circled where to look for the clutches on the diff. I see you took some pics, did you happen to catch this in those pics?

Just in case the link doesn't work, he shows the S spring trick at 12:21 - If yours is a 9.75, it should be pretty similar.

I was hoping he got rid of his truck so he wouldn't pop back up. Lol

I didnt see that due to orientation of the gear set and carrier so I'll check it out tomorrow when I have some light.

I honestly cant wait to have an enclosed space with lights and cement to work in.

Best thing in the world, I swear. Especially in the winter.... and even more especially when it is heated.
