Thinking
I am a member of a Fox Body page that includes people who own, or want to own Fox Body's. The guys with a Fox already are happy because they think this auction will drive prices up on Fox's. The guys without Fox's are pissed off because of the same reason, lol. I have been looking around for an additional.... kinda sorta. If I find a good deal on one, I'm in.
I paid 4200 for my 89 in 95. I'd like to think I could come close to doubling that now.... if not more. Speaking of my 89, tomorrow will be 23 years since I bought my 89. Such a fun car!
Well, a lot of people believe these auto auctions are driving them up. There was a 7-Up car that went for over 80 grand. Unfortunately, that has driven the prices up. I know where there's a low mileage 89 GT for about 12 grand, and it is considered to be a STEAL.
Fellars... is there any way to accurately check compression without being able to crank it over with the starter? Is it accurate by hand?
My neighbor has an 3V F150 that he's torn down the front chain cover, all of the FEAD, and valve covers are off. He wants me to help him fix it now. The passenger side timing chain guide broke all to hell, and must be down in the oil pan now.
Anyway - he says he was told cylinder 2 or 3 (he can't remember) has really low compression. So, hence my question about being able to check it without the starter.
I think he needs to bag it and find a used motor.

If you can get an impact on the crank. You can't just check one cylinder, you have to do comparisons how ever you do it.
OK, thanks Brew. I was wondering if that was a possibility. I'll have to get the crank pulley back on it, as it is not there right now. Yeah.... he wanted me to put the whole thing back together (and pay me), but everything is all apart in boxes... I told him I would help him. But, I don't like putting something back together that I didn't take apart.
Have you fellars seen this? I need to research this new motor, it sounds really interesting.

Yea help him, with him being present. I wouldn't take a dime, also carefully word any advice given. Personally, I would dodge that bullet. 2 valve yes, 3 valve no....specially a boxed 3v lol.

Your just asking for trouble, re assembling a 3V from customer/acquaintance/friend boxes? No No No lol. Those engines rarely run right as it is. Your setting yourself up to get fingered for problems with that thing from here on out. That engine is more than likely a mess in a lot of places. Man, don't do it lol

Like I say, your concerns are the same I had. I am glad to hear my concerns are warranted and valid, because I feel a little bit bad about not doing it for him because he is truly a good guy. But, like you hinted, getting paid to do it is kind of a contract saying it will work when it is back together..... and although I don't think he'd do anything legally if it doesn't work, I just don't want that possibility.
I've seen my Buddy get bad reviews online, and BBB claims filed against him from people who bring him a junkyard trans that is already burned up. He's even had a customer call the cops on him when he tells them "you were paying me for my time, not for a trans that works". And this was the EXACT scenario I thought of when I was looking at this F150.
Thank you for those comments, Brew. Yeah, I've had these same thoughts. I was ever-so-slightly interested in getting paid to fix it until I went and saw how far he had dug into it, and that it was in boxes and the garage floor (who knows if it is even all there?). He also wants to band-aid it back together. The person he bought it from had already done the chains, tensioners, guides, phasers, and phaser sensors. All he wants to do is fix the busted guide and hope it runs well enough to trade it in. I told that I have no idea if that chain is stretched, if it hopped a link, etc. I've explained that his best choice is to get a used motor. That guide is MIA is a pretty big piece. Pretty much all that remains is the ends where the bolts go. I have a hard time thinking that it didn't somehow get ran over by the chain on its way down to the pan.

LOL... yep. Even seen that happen to my Buddy. There was a Dodge Caravan he built the trans in. While he had it apart, he noticed cross pin in the differential was loose, and had damaged the housing (very common on the dodge minivans). So, he went and pulled a good, used unit at the wrecking yard, on his dime, and installed it. Well, about a year later, the differential went out again. She wanted him to fix it under warranty... but the warranty was on the trans - not the diff.
What does she do? File a claim with the BBB. I actually take care of all of his documentation like that because he just doesn't have the time. Once I submitted the rebuttal explaining the situation it was instantly dropped by the BBB.
But yeah.... sometimes being nice doesn't play out nice for you.
