I'd buy that a power surge from the juice coming back on could knock out a board, but not that it came back on "too soon." Something wonky with that.

Our fridge is a Samsung, and I agree they should stick to electronics. The icemaker design isn't great, and the freezer ices up occasionally due to a poor drain that causes the buildup to hit the fan. The TV is rock solid, and I've been happy with my Galaxy phones. (I've been waffling on getting a Watch 4 Classic for the last week or so, now.)

I checked into one that installs behind the meter, and the power company won't let me do it. :-/

The way I take it, the protector delays in order to absorb the initial spike. I dunno... I think it's something like this:

The fuse (s) on the board/PCB SHOULD Isolate against surge....IF it's the board. Low voltage or brown out has some harm potential as well.

Homeowners issuance may cover it. If it was due to an outside source. White , didn't you say this happened to your parents because of the fires in your area ? Good enough!
