If its not leaking, it's OK for now, but you will have one helluva time getting off later wrench or not after it heat cycles time and time again. If it was me, I'd replace it with a new filter tightened correctly.

EDIT: You *did* coat the gasket with oil before installing, right?

It was very good the first few(?) seasons, but after awhile it got pretty dark.

Yes, the gasket is coated with oil.
I'm changing it tomorrow.
I have tons of oil filters.

Who would of knew!!
Those flute cap wrenches are excellent tools.
Mind you I didn't go extreme tight but it's way more than hand tight..

Once I get a new oil filter on tomorrow, I'll mark it to be sure.

I usually know my oil filters are tight when I say "yep, good". Then they're perfect.

I use three fingers and a thumb to tighten it as much I can....since I can't seem to remember to write mileage on the thing AFTER installing it vs before. Don't want to smear the ink.

Can you ruin the oil filter adapter, or strip the threads if you tighten the oil filter by oil wrench ?
I'm talking about beyond "hand tight", not crushing extreme tight mind you.
