Thinking
i had to have the rear diff on my 2018 F150 rebuilt at 5k miles. factory never set the preload and trashed everything. Mileage doesn't mean anything if the parts are bad

I (think!) I know axle tubes (and thus, bearings,) are not filled with oil. What is the level? 1/8"?
> GRF150; The bearings are shot?
I just heard this now. No one said anything in previous posts.
< I'm sorry but I have to say, I have said this a
couple times. Others have been more forthright. We may not have mentioned parts EVERY time, but when not mentioned, it was said, ~"all of the stuff inside is bad."
< Which bearings, how many am I looking at to replace?
< How did this happen ? The truck only has 90 000 miles on it?!?
The PO, previous owner, was probably naughty. Maybe forded a deep stream. In any case, he.sold it to you with a very low fluid level you said... way before you added the "quart too much." So, you (and he,) drove with low oil. Oil then is not thrown (literally,) onto the piņon bearing, and may have never reached the outer axle bearings. Luckily, the parts are almost way cheap, as compared to some repairs.
OReillys should (but may not,) at YOUR local store, have the bearing puller tools. (Renters 'forget/lose' a tool part and the counter jerk doesn't want a hassle and returns their deposit and doesn't tell the boss so he can order one.) CHECK the kit for completeness, with counter help, before you walk away with it.
Do you have a Limited Slip differential?
To help, we need to know... if you are to do this yourself.
If I can, YOU can, but you HAVE to really pay attention a lil better. You will use, (or learn,) some important mech skills. You will emerge as probably the only guy on your block who rebuilt his own rear end.
It WILL take some time searching and watching UTube. But first, do you have a Limited Slip rear end? (That's Ford's name for it.)
Guys -
1 - Would you agree that first he must open the cover and see by fingernail feel, if the gears are still smooth and useable??? (Before ordering parts.)
2 - Would you say his parts cost will be ~$200-250? $300 with oil and RTV?

2. That is probably pretty close, if he needs a new R&P probably closer to 400-500.
Situations like that are where I'm glad I know guys that do diffs. I can do any of it, but setting a R&P is not in my wheel house - yet. I need to get my Buddy to learn me a thing or three on setting them up, because I have a feeling I'll be playing around with gear ratios when I get the 351 in there. I might wish I'd stuck to the 2.73's.
After seeing BREW2L's latest video, I'm really liking the sounds of a beefy AOD though.

yea i don't know much about setting R&Ps up either, that was the one nice thing about the 9'' from the thunderchicken, the whole 3rd member came out as one. i debated swapping from the 2.8 rear to a 3.0 or similar but it would kill the highway speed
i remember when i put axle bearings and seals in that car, the axles were about 32 spline and about an inch thick

Rotating the wheels shows the point of contact between the gears. One aims, generally, for the center of the gears. Adjusting, (tightening ONLY, NEVER loosening,) the crush nut, until you are spot on.
There are some advisories on UTubes to get more specific about details of rotational direction, load or not on the wheels, which I do not recall.

(And lug count. Sadly I did not think at the time that I could have opted for 6 lugs, and replaced wheels to get a more modern set of larger updated wheels... and later do the fronts, when replacing the bearing-hub assy.)
