Unfortunately "Jacobs" doesn't mean what it use to. The Jacobs chuck design has been co-opted over the years to go from "Jacobs Type" to just "Jacobs." The original Jacobs chuck was based on the precision of the ball screw with threaded, tapered jaws. A lot of crap being sold today as Jacobs chucks use tapered jaws but all similarity to a Jacobs ends there. A lot of the Chinese chucks replace the ball screw design with an opposing brass taper for the jaws to follow for opening and closing. Apart from the loss of precision the brass design quickly wears and doesn't wear evenly from jaw to jaw. I bought a Chinese made drill press about 10 years ago and the drill press is OK but the chuck didn't last 6 months with mild use. This is where I got my lesson from. Unlike a real Jacobs there are no re-build kits for this junk. Looking at rebuild kits is a good place to start when buying a drill with a chuck. If a rebuild kit is even available, what parts come with it? The parts will identify the quality of the chuck.

The drill says "Made in the USA" right on it.... but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean the chuck isn't chinese. After seeing a video of a guy WAILING on the handle trying to remove the chuck on his DCD777, I am sold that this drill is tough as hell, just with a shiddy chuck. I dropped my 1/4" impact from about 7 feet right onto concrete, with a 5AH battery on it, and it held up. These SOB's are solid!

EDIT: Here's the video.... this is how NOT to remove a chuck, LOL.

I've got the Makita chuck you posted in my Amazon cart. Probably add it to me Christmas list so the Wife has some stuff to buy me, LOL.
What, bad weather alert ? Yea, you'll like the Makita, for everything that doesn't fit the drill directly. That little 1/4 DeWalt is a bad **** little impact with a paddle bit in it isn't it lol. Throws off a rooster tail of wooden bullets, the kid said my hair looks like a Christmas tree after using one of those bits in that thing lol. Anyway, Home Depot carries that Makita chuck on the rack if you want to check it out first.

Thank you. Really enjoyed the video and there is some satisfaction in watching someone else get frustrated and go to extremes. I went through a similar chuck removal on an old, 50's probably, 5\8 ths Milwaukee angle drill. I ruined the entire angle mechanism because after the bolt in the chuck it was held on with a keyed taper and not threads. All I needed was a gear puller and replacing the angle mechanism cost half as much as replacing the entire drill. I was half expecting the drill in the video to be on a taper also.

Did you catch what these were for? I've seen where composites were being used on an outboard motor but this would be a first for a auto engine.

BTW, if your Amber Alerts are anything like what we get here, they can have to do with an event hundreds of miles away and a "unknown red car." WTF.

I saw something about people 3D printing hand guns so why not? What are the limits now with materials for 3D printing? Last I remember seeing was about various powdered metals, some of which had limited heat treating properties. I imagine that has advanced from when and what I saw?

The last one said "Grey Tyota", so everyone was texting me asking if I needed to get turned in, LOL.

The one last night said "Call 511 for Info". The road signs rotated between "Call 511" and "Check Local News for Info". Those two things completely negate the purpose of an Amber Alert... which is a quick, to the point message right in your hand. If it requires placing a call or doing some research......
