River... one more thing that I will add is, when I interviewed for my current position, my Boss said something to me that stuck with me - and it has turned out to be very, very true. I am sure that Ohio and Buck-O will agree with this, as they also do work on computers a lot. He said "Honestly, about 70% of your job is going to be how well you can search for answers and solutions on Google". A lot of the answers are there.... sometimes they are not, especially when you are dealing with specialty ERP systems, etc. - but a good portion of what I need to solve issues is already somewhere on the web. Sometimes it means that I have to re-word my searches, or dig for periods of time, and sometimes my fixes are trial and error.

Sounds a lot like vehicles than. Most of your work is diagnosing and troubleshooting where experience often outweighs the book learning. I see why you chose your profession.
EDIT: The thing on the news was primarily about the costs associated with training and how the amount of training can effect the required workforce needed. Employees can't be in training and working at the same time.
Yep, I agree with White. A ton of what I troubleshoot is done with a trip to Google. We used to subscribe to a Microsoft service called TechNet and spend a bunch of money to CDs/DVDs sent to us monthly with information on what problems had been solved and how to do it. We stopped years ago because Google became more reliable and up to date with solutions.
I think White is saying he mentioned a Cisco class and within an hour they had sent him an email about registering for a class. He is implying that they are spying and using what they find for marketing to him.
And yep, Googling is both good in searching archived items for legacy issues, or current issues - like when MS sends out an update that throws the world off kilter.

Red out today enjoying the weather. Most of the leaves have finally dropped (most into my freaking yard). Tonneau goes on tomorrow (drying right now===went with the Rhino liner spray. Seems to be okay right now. At least it's paintable for next summer. Looks like it's bath time for the wheels at least, lol.
