Sync 2 to Sync 3 Upgrade (Everything you need to know)
I've got a clue to try tomorrow after running to Staples or similar.. I read in another forum that the USB stick should be USB 2.0 (if it's blue on the end where you plug it in, that's USB 3.0 and may not work).. That's exactly what I've got.. I don't have any USB 2.0 sticks -- I'll have to get one tomorrow -- we'll see if that helps or not.

Not sure what you're looking for regarding Sync.. There's a few threads here in this forum that are interesting if you're into the nuts-n-bolts of the Sync 3 system.. I'm 99% sure that I found the USB 2.0 reference for the updating Sync 3 from one version to another in a Mustang forum -- there's a wealth of bits here and there across numerous Ford forums, not just here.
Anyway, Here are two that I found interesting -- the first is for the nerdy types who like the monkeying around with computers : here
and in the off-chance you need to roll-back an update this might be a good thread to read : here
I'll keep you posted once I try the USB 2.0 memory stick swap-out for doing my upgrade from Sync 3.0 (version 2.3) to Sync 3.0 (version 3.0) which won't update with a USB 3.0 (blue connector) USB stick or via WIFI which I gather rarely works from reading on numerous Ford forums.

oh.. why not download it from the Ford site? Are you able to do that? That is where I got mine.. I did get a VIN with my new to me 2016 Ford Escape APIM and used that to register on the site... My understanding was that 4DTech was hosting, for a while, the update but probably pulled it off some time ago for some reason -- perhaps they got yelled at by Ford.. ??

ok.. final followup.. I bought a 32Gb USB 2.0 memory stick at my local Staples -- it's a Philips (model FM32FD05B) which I made sure had an LED so I could tell if it was being accessed. I formatted it as ExFAT and loaded up the latest Sync 3 version 3.x on it.. It took a good 10 minutes as it's only USB 2.0 speeds (it's about 7x slower than the USB 3.0 equiv).. Anyway, once it was loaded and plugged into the USB Hub in the truck, it started blinking immediately and I got a message on the screen within probably 10-15 seconds saying an update was occurring. The overall update took probably 15 minutes for me -- I keep hearing 30 mins for others but mine was UNDER 20... Anyway, once it's done, eject the thumb drive, and you have to shutdown the truck and wait until the screen is completely off before restarting.. Once it comes back you'll probably not notice any differences -- I didn't. It seems to work for me -- CarPlay works like a charm -- Waze, Overcast, Spotify,etc..
The key is to use a USB 2.0 spec'd thumb drive -- NOT a USB 3.0.. Its like the APIM doesn't even see the USB 3.0 devices.. But 2.0 devices are another story!!

My “new to me” screen has a pretty big scratch in the screen that you can feel with your eyes closed.. I found it interesting that when using it, it is barely noticeable at all.. just throwing that out there... I thought it would be way more noticeable than it is.
