12-2-10 3.5L GTDI CALIBRATION UPDATE - VARIOUS ISSUES - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 2/7/2012
Publication Date: February 15, 2012
FORD: 2011-2012 F-150
ISSUE:
Some 2011-2012 F150 vehicles built on or before 2/7/2012 and equipped with a 3.5L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with various diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and driveability concerns.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
The calibration update contains improvement actions and enhancements to address the following conditions:
Intermittent engine surge during moderate to light loads at cruise.
Enhancements to misfire monitor detection.
Powertrain control module (PCM) DTC P0430 and/or P0096.
NOTE: INSURE ALL HARD FAULT POWERTRAIN DTCS ARE ADDRESSED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE CALIBRATION UPDATE.
If the vehicle exhibits DTC P0430 replace the left bank catalytic converter. Refer to WSM section 309-00. Proceed to Step 2.
Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release 77A.03A or higher. This new calibration is not included in the 2012.1A DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.
NOTE: PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

If this PCM update does this "Enhancements to misfire monitor detection." and no codes are being detected prior to the update, wouldn't it stand to reason you need the update? If they won't do the update because no codes are detected how can they detect them if the enhancement detection isn't there?

I called my dealer and they will flash me Monday. They'd heard of the shudder, asked if I had CEL (do not), had to look up the TSB (I was first caller). My symptoms are very minor but I'm doing it anyway.

I wonder if this will also resolve the issue of misfire/shaking under heavy acceleration that was blamed on excessive moisture accumulation in the intercooler. Maybe the "Enhancements to misfire monitor detection" will allow it to run as normal for minor misfires from moisture and correct itself by burning the moisture off instead of going into limp mode.

I had my reflash done this morning. Dont have much time driving it yet but seemed to still shudder a little bit on my 8 mile drive from dealer to work. I could feel the jerk but did not hear the old noise from the turbos. It is 80 or 90% less noticeable than it was before. I was told by service advisor that the reflash was meant to help the problem but wont make it go away. So far that is what i have noticed. I am really hoping my mileage goes up with this, was getting 14.5 here in winter months. 15.8 over 5,080 miles is what the trip b reads. The funny thing is i never noticed the shudder until i read this thread, LOL. Overall i am happy with it, I used to own an 09 sierra and this ford beats it in every way!!

Trying to get mine in tomorrow. Hope this isnt just a band aid and they never totally fix it. I guess everyone keep putting their info on bucketmans thread so if this isnt resolved we have more people with the issue.
