If a change improves economy, I am betting something else gets taken away, such as durability, emissions or somethign else that the OEMs chose not to sacrifice.

Agree with you 100%. Lots of people bolt on parts without thinking about the full affects. I'm guilty as well. ie I want a dual exhaust but I know there will be some negatives associated.

I have a 2011 F150 4x4 Ecoboost SCREW with 3.31 gears. I drive alot of highway and manage to average 17 mpg. At 60 MPG I can get as good as 23 mpg. At 70 it drops to 19 real quick. The biggest contributor I have noticed in New England is the weather. Anything below 40 degrees and the mpg drops a good amount.

Colder air is denser, which means more are resistance. I manage 16-17 MPG when driving 75 mph on the Interstate (speed limit is 75), with long rolling hills, and temps below freezing. When it's nicer out, in the 70's, I'll get more like 20 MPG. The worst I ever got was 12 MPG on the highway with my work gear loaded up, head winds, hills, and it was -20 deg out.

I just did two mpg runs the first was 450 miles 60 to 70mph
adv. 20.3. I did see some 21.2 mostly at the 60 -65 mph.
This was NJ to Va (across Pa. to route 81 to Roanoke for those that know these roads). (I did have 3 miles @ a roll due to an accident).

The trip home was 400 mile from Va. to NJ thru Washington D.C.
very little traffic and adv. 20.5 @ 60 to 70mph.
Temps were 44 to about 60 both trips.

Truck is totally stock 2013 4X4 STX with 18" wheels and a 3.55 gear.
6.5 bed, bed cover ext'd cab. (3500 miles on truck).

I am happy with those numbers.

So far I'm happy. Reset the trip 76 miles after I got home.

Haven't reset it yet or the mpg.

Have never been over 65, but have floored it to pass a couple of slowpokes before.

And I don't have the fancy productivity screen in this truck. Its an XL.

Has the 5.0 V8.

I just traded my 2011 Eco SCREW XLT 4X4 6.5' bed with 3.31 gears. The truck had 88,000 miles on it and the lifetime mpg was 16.3. Loved the truck but i drive way too many miles to keep something that is out of warranty. I do GPS soil sampling so i have an ATV in the back 70% of the time. The best i could get it to average was 20 mpg in 1000 miles of driving. Which was a mix of city and highway. Traded for a new 5.0 SCREW XLT 4x4 6.5' bed and 3.55 gears. Its only got 400 miles on it so its a little early to calculate the mileage but so far i'm happy with it. I just really missed the sound of a V8.

gregsf150stx I recomend that you give the truck a few good hard runs very soon. Say 0-70 would be fine, more if you like. Maybe a highway merge.
These new engine need hard driving right away to get a good break in.
The cross hatch pattern on the cylinders that was put there to break in the rings is not very deep like old motors were. Once this wears down there is nothing left to match the rings to the bore.
The manufacturer or dealer will not tell you to do this.
The manual will not but you will have a healthy motor that will not burn oil for many years.
You can research this on the web.
Enjoy that new truck.

Now that it's warmer, I'm seeing numbers comparable to these (3.7, 3.55, 17" wheels). I think if I tried very hard to maximize mileage, I could probably get 22 hwy. Without too much effort, 21 is achievable. My old Nissan Frontier got about 24-25 most of the time, so I'm pleased with 21.
