Maybe I misinterpreted and assumed you meant all officers.....there are so many posts to glance over when taking my quick internet/coffee break that I do sometimes misread things.

That could be similar to how you seem to draw a correlation in my statement of how proficient I am at poking holes in paper and expanded it beyond being a statement about how proficient I am at poking holes in paper...
My point was that it's unstressed to poke holes in paper. I find it therapeutic and enjoy the sportsmanship of shooting well. However, I can only hope, that if needed, some muscle memory will be there and my body can do it by rote.

Departments don't train to keep their groups in a golf-ball at 50 yards....they train to get off quick shots that land in center mass....with an emphasis on close range defense. It's not sniper school.

Oh, and I know how to use it as well. Just ask the steel gongs hanging across the lake outside my back door, they get "rung" often from the back porch after I drink my coffee.
I literally dream of that back porch, that cup of coffee, and the smell in the air after a few rounds. Well done.

How many people really need a hand gun or should have a hand gun. I rarely ever hear of someone needing a gun and using it properly when something happens. Usually its just the opposite.

Anyhow rant over. Good luck!

Now THAT is some airtight logic. I'd love to live in your reality. You do realize a ton of Americans don't enjoy the convenience of living in a safe community or having the police on speed dial? For many, personal protection is the only protection they have.

Let me guess, orange man bad?

That sounds reasonable to me..
I've never known one that didn't like guns...so I'd be put off by that too.

Well, I am retired US Army Infantry/Scout, and a retired municipal Police Officer/Peace Officer. My ties are to the Fort Hood area. Back in October of 1991, we had a shooting Killeen TX, it was the largest mass murder in America for a number of years. There were two major issues with the shooting. #1 a female wanting to follow current law at the time, left her handgun in her car. She watched her parents get gunned down in front of her, along with others and she would have been able to engage or stop the shooter. #2 there were police right next door in a training class, but as they were in training they were unarmed and stood by as people died and they waited for armed officer to arrive. Now Texas passed laws for people to carry due to that shooting. My Agency made it policy that we (Sworn Officers) be armed at all times, even when off duty in our jurisdiction (minus doing set activities where it would be silly, but we could be armed and drink as long as when we started to get drunk we secured our weapon(s) in our vehicles...).

Also on November 5th 2009 we had Major Nadal Hasan shooting up Fort Hood, which my Agency played a part in. The Army/Military changed base carry laws due to that shooting, and set soldiers can be armed on base now.

As a patrol officer, supervisor, and supervisor for our CID I dealt with a lot of cases, just about all cases. There were numbers of cases where firearms saved lives, and numbers where lives were lost due to not having a firearm.

Texas law allows a person to keep a loaded firearm in their vehicle, even on their employers property if they ban firearms by policy (minus set location). It treats a vehicle as an extension of the home.

Outside of work, most people tent to be at home or in their vehicle going somewhere, be it work or other places. Having a firearm in a vehicle is like having a jack, jumper cables, or tow straps. You might not need it, might never need it, but when you do...

Best to have a secured firearm in a vehicle, but its only a delay tactic and it can be stolen. But so can your gun safe at home, or money in a bank. But when your travelling you need quick access to your firearm for it to be effective, so its best to be within easy reach, but secured to where it stays in place.

FWIW, I feel safer at Military and Police ranges where they have some firearm training vs the public ranges where many are just learning how to handle firearms, let alone shoot.

Quoting, just because it needs to be repeated again. Amen.

And what have we learned today, children? That's right... don't come to a truck forum, where many of the owners likely own, carry, and can proficiently use firearms... and suggest that those very same people shouldn't have firearms.

Looking at @ABF150Fan 's profile, he appears to be a Canuckian. So I guess that's where these faulty ideas come from.

Statistically speaking...defensive handgun use occurs hundreds of thousands of times per year. I hope I never need mine...but it’s there every day just in case.

Good point, actually. There are people on here from countries where citizens are not allowed to own firearms. Being an American, I do sometimes forget that private ownership of firearms could be quite foreign to some on here...simply due to societal norms in their home country. But, I do expect it is a very very small percentage that would visit this site.
