So I tried to browse though 500+ plages to try and see how everyone was doing the upgrade and I really can't find the answers to my questions. If anybody could help, that would be great.
1. I have a 2016 XLT running Sync 3 Version 1, build15139. What version do you have to upgrade to use Apple CarPlay?
2. Where would you download the latest/most stable update from?
3. After the update and replacement of the USB box, is there anything else that needs to be done?
1. minimum 2.0, current one available is 2.3
2. owner.ford.com a.k.a syncmyride.com
3. no, hardware is plug and play, works after install.
Is there a way to choose Ford Nav or Apple Car Play? Car Play is the default.

True, but I'm not sure if that was his question.
On Sync 3 go to:
> Settings
> Car Play
Select which iPhone you want to change the defaults of
> Select auto connect option: Enabled or disabled.
If enabled then Car Play will always be active while the phone is plugged in and Apple Maps will be the default.
If set as disabled, you can use factory nav (which sucks) or use Ford App Link enabled apps such as Sygic or Glympse (which also suck), while listening to music on your iPhone over the factory audio whereas your iPhone will still connect as an arbitrary USB disk and carplay will be disabled.

Unless if I've made some sort of grave error which is possible given the accuracy of Google translate, these are the latest maps for Sync 3. There are two things to note:
1. EU APIMs have 64 GB of Rom and our North American Nav enabled APIMs only have 32GB so it may or may not install, unless if you root Sync 3 and create a new partition for maps on an external USB (which has been done, lol).
2. These files may not contain any North American content... but on the other hand maybe they do and they've simply been labeled as EU when in fact they are global maps. The reason I'm speculating on this is because the maps file is freaking huge, 12.19GB. North America all by itself is typically less than 1.5GB.
I'm not posting links because if I do Ford will probably close this thread. I am posting the names of files though because many of you have legit propper authorized access through Ford to their files and might want to experiment with these.
I do have a spare Nav enabled Sync 3 APIM to play with. Unfortunately though, downloading this thing is taking a lifetime.

Has anyone got the latest update with Nav to work? I currently have 2.0 with build 16074 installed and have tried to update to the latest one that is on the Sync website 4 times now. Each time it does starts out fine. It resets after about 5-7 minutes each time but then never says it is finished. Last night I let it go for over an hour and never said it was complete. I have tried 2 different flash drives and from both a MacOS computer download and a Windows download. The MacOS loaded too many files and I knew it was not going to work. Seems like this should be a very easy process. WTH!?!
I honestly am thinking about ordering a APIM and installing it. I bought the truck last month, and it was having some of the issues I am having now. I assumed at that time that the update would correct those issues, but they have persisted. I was thinking about trying the 3.0 update before I ripped my dash apart and spent several hundred dollars on the APIM.
I actually took it to the local dealer towards the end of last month, and had a horrible experience, and they did not do the update which is why I took it to them... I scheduled it 4 days in advance and made sure I got the first appointment on a Saturday got up 2 hours earlier than normal and walked back to my house (1.6 miles not far but still, and it was cold) just to be called 4 hours later saying they could not do the update. This was less than a month from me dropping my old 06 truck off for engine issues, that they tried to tell me I needed a new transmission, then all new plugs, then just a plug must be loose - but yet never actually performed any work on the truck for the 5 days it was there.. took it to a shade tree mechanic that I have used for years, and right away determined it was the #1 coil, replaced it and everything was fine.
The next closest dealer is about an hour away... Due to family and work, I really do not have time to even take off to go and drop it off at a dealer... the only time I have to myself is from about 10:00 - 12:30 every night after my family goes to bed, so that is when I work on my projects...
I did call the local dealer yesterday to discuss my problems, the service adviser had no clue what she was talking about, transferred me to someone else who said I was to blame, then was getting transferred again and got disconnected... I cannot deal with them again shame on them the first 2 times, shame on me if I do it again sort of thing.
I did order the new USB hub last night that is supposed to be carplay compatible... I am hoping that I can use carplay and have a dependable way to listen to my music...
It is still so perplexing how rock solid the bluetooth is when it is a phone call, but absolutely the most unreliable and confusing thing to try to listen to music... It was working on my way to lunch today, get ready to leave lunch and the song I had been listening to started right back up... I then had the audacity to try changing the song... and no audio from my phone... the time was moving on both the phone and the sync3 screen but no sound, switched to fm and satellite and they were perfect, tried to switch back to the phone and got the old "media devise not available" tried to plug it in via USB, and it never registered that I had anything plugged in... someone called me and it went straight to sync3, answered by touching the screen talked perfectly the whole conversation, and then went right back to "media devise not available" when I tried to listen to music again.
Beyond that, the ford dealer said it was a $200 diagnostic fee, and my concern is that I get there and it work perfectly while there...
I am literally grasping at straws but again I have to believe its a bad APIM... even though I am not 100% sure what it is or how to get one. The one I found on Tasca only appears to be sync2 versions. Will be trying disconnecting the battery tonight, but I am not holding out much hope at this point
If you don’t yet have the newer USB hub, I highly recommend that as the next step. If you can get Apple CarPlay to work, I think you will be much happier. I use CarPlay all the time, I bought my ‘16 new and had to manually update Sync to 2.2 (I think) and buy the hub from an out of state dealer. It’s super easy to replace.
