Dudes.... I touched on this somewhere in this thread, or another, but I can't seem to remember where. I had an EVAP system code come up, which I cleared because I was in the middle of moving, and the code has not come back. However, I can smell fuel after I shut the truck off - so something strange is afloat. What is the most common failure on these trucks for this?

The fuel smell isn't EVAP although it might seem to make sense from the info available. Not IME anyway. A bad cap MIGHT produce an odor, -it's a stretch though. EVAP DTC's, I use to get them way back when before nipping that one completely by deleting the internal hose filter....and that was because Ford discontinued canister parts. For the 98 at the time.

Oder ALWAYS led to a leak somewhere. The overflow tube would give out on my truck every now and again. Just rust through. Pin holes developed and I'd get a wiff here and there before replacing. I'm on assembly #3. Wish I rear wheel liners on this truck. That would have made huge change in bed longevity, among other things lol.

The cap is under a year old.... and I bought a Motorcraft too. I will look into the overflow tube. Now that you mention that, I had the same thing happen on my Ranger... but that actually would leak onto the ground when the tank was full. Haven't had that happen on the F150 yet, but maybe it's a bit different design? Do you have to drop the tank to replace it?

****.... I was just looking the filler necks up on the web. Here's ANOTHER 6/24/96 change. My truck was built in 6/96, but I don't know what day... LOL.

Whitey.....take your serial number from the truck and google it for date of manufacturer. I've done that a few times with a newer F150, a Mustang, and a Fusion.

Thank you, Brew and AK. You guys rock!

BTW, I just ordered Craftsman Assurelink for my garage door opener. I can tell if the garage is open or closed from my phone, and also open or close it from my phone. I've wanted to get this since we started looking at houses, and it just so happens that the house we bought has an opener that you can add it to.

Yea there's other possibilities for fuel odor, leaky injectors and whatnot, just not common with these trucks.

Nah, you don't have to drop the tank, the entire assembly easily swaps out. Well as long as your body and joints still have that flexing ability anyway lol.

Pay attention to the length of the new one. They have to be a perfect fit length wise. IF not, they will kink when it's 80* outside. Just sayin, it can be a little tricky setting one up perfectly. You can manipulate the band clamps for this for the most part, just make sure the filler neck connection is ALL THE WAY down on the tank connection. It's hard to see that if you don't have the right light. PITA if you have adjust it later.

That sounds cool.

I don't have a garage no more. Temporary, but it's going be a year or so to build one and be able to use it. My trucks going to hate this. Many new problems on horizon being left outside I expect. I expect my first will be a GEM problem, just a hunch. The trucks never been without cover when not in use.

Brew, do you suspect you've got a leaky windshield? My truck has sat outside the whole time I've owned it, but my Expy is going to be out in the weather now. I kept it in the carport before because of the leak it had/has. I would like to build a carport on the side of my garage now so I can have some shade and cover the cars when it snows. We'll see though... I really need to get rid of one vehicle, LOL. Problem is... which one?

No, the DPFE is on the f150, been fighting the alternator on the escape. I have a huge saga written for that bastard. Got the alternator replaced and engine runs good but brakes or something is scraping on the front right.

As for the DPFE I've replaced it three times with the plastic ones. Haven't found any of the metal ones. Once in a blue moon I'll get a code from the transmission sensor when it's above about 85F out. Haven't had a chance to replace the fluid yet since I've been fighting the escape and storms.

Hopefully I'll see what the brake problem is tonight and then can get back to fixing my truck.
