It was sort of like that here last month for a while. Could hear the furnace fire up late morning. Windows open until early evening. Central air a little later... Start the circle again lol.

Sprinkles are beginning to visit the San Francisco Bay Area, and suddenly the roof of my '01 is showing significant all over rust. What's a good primer and rattle-can match paint to apply after a sanding, to hold me until next summer? Or for a limited area quickie, is a cheap franchise the better approach. At $300 a car for the simplest job, they should be below that for a simple roof, despite sanding and priming. A freelancer with no overhead offered $500. Too much.

I'd go with that iron workers stuff, it's used for automotive as well. Red Oxide primer...its easy, coats and protects very well ....and cheap.

Thanks. So far the rattle cans a search showed was a paint and a clear, the clear being required for the paint... A 2-can PKG... And two packs were suggested per a roof, $50/PKG. That's $100 + primer +sandpaper. Twice what I had guessed.

You can pick up Red Oxide at welding supply shop..there is a primer.

There's also Zinc Chromate...but more critical with how it goes down and cures.

Rustoleum primer should last a little while.

Two of the suggestions are quick. Rusto and RedO

I'd go with the Red Oxide...it's tough and should prevent the rust through the winter best.

Better to wait until you have time to complete to whole project...Yeah I know...doesn't always work that way..

Good Luck Man!.

Duplicolor color matched the bottoms of my doors perfectly. It didn't match the channels on my roof so perfectly. I still don't understand why the two outcomes.

Not sure what color your truck is Bill, but used Rustoleum's rust converter followed by semi-gloss black on my roof. The truck is high enough that very few people besides me will ever see it.

My guess would be sun fade.

That was my first thought - UV impingement.
Yup, roof NEEDS winter protection. Sanding will take an old (inexperienced) man a couple days. another for primer. Studying up on rust remover. (not convertor.) Another day for paint. It's a dark blue, though I've read somewhere, just once and cannot relocate it, some type of purple. Indeed it seems so, where the sun hasn't faded it. Purple is read and blue. Red faded fast... Leaving a more blue appearance. I've not decided the paint code on the door. Sometimes one can find a company who makes exact paint matches and puts them in a rattle can... quite reasonable at $20 per. Thx all! JBrew got me started in the right initial direction.
