Today I rebuilt a Craftsman ratchet I've had since I was a boy. I dropped the detent ball twice and nearly gave up on it, but I got lucky and found it both times. Works like new!

Otherwise and you should of noticed, when you stop and drain, then begin the process over again, the distilled remains contaminated without gettin much better. The process that ended up work the best for me, - after refilling totally with distilled the first time, fire it up let it circulate , pull the drain plug while it's running and feed 10 gallons of distilled into the degas bottle keeping it full while it is running and draining. Don't shut it down until that step is done..
Shut it off, let it cool then drain the 2.33 gallons of distilled from the system. It will be crystal clear the first time with 0 contamination vs repeating the process multiple times with limited success. Then all that's needed to do the math for the to mix the concentrate in. It's why you use the concentrate. Subtract what drained from capacity, mix same amount of concentrate to cover whats in the block. From there I mixed 2 gallons in the original jugs and used those to top it off having almost a gallon extra. Flushing is the main thing I did different is all.

A home depot bucket, with your own gallon marks on the pail helps keep track of how much is draining at first and in the end. Sort of a double math checker for yuh...same amount drains every time. 2.33 is only a portion of what the system holds..I'm sure you know that.

It's most likley more difficult for you to see contamination as the coolant spec'ed for your truck resembles more of a dirty water look to begin with. With the green (my old 5fours spec) it's a lot easier to tell that the old hasn't been totally flushed out yet.
_____________

Thought I would mention that because I've attempted the stop drain and fill again one after another in the past vs pulling the block plug method. After the 5th attempt and being that the distilled still showed quite a bit of contamination I gave up on that method. Then I noticed a tech at Ford using the method explained above. He was using garden hose though vs distilled. But it seemed to work, finale system drain was clear. Gave it a try before defaulting back the block drain method, block drain method was kind of a PITA since they only have the one plug on the drivers side and you need to use compressed air to clear the block. Anyway, gave it shot the last flush and work great...much faster as well. Give it a try the next time.
I'll give the "running-flush" method a try next time, Brew, thanks. The trouble here, though, is for a 50/50 mix, I need 3 gallons of coolant in the system. With draining only 2.33 gallons, I can't get the needed amount in the rad/bottle, have only a 40% mixture, and am about 2/3 of a gallon short. I'll need to drain and pitch about a gallon of the weak mixture and replace it with a gallon of concentrate, so instead of buying the three gallons needed, I have to buy a fourth and will basically throw away about 1/2 gallon of brand new coolant.

EDIT: Unless I save some of that, add some new coolant so it's a 50/50 mix for adding later.... TOO. MUCH. MATH!!!

Suppose I was strange in that I installed the prestone kit with the tee on the heater hose, then, after opening the radiator drain, ran the garden hose full blast while running the truck until I had clean water pumping out for about five minutes.

Sealed it up after that and ran a bottle of the prestone flush in straight water, which I ran for a week before repeating the process (lots o junk came out the second time).

Then I took it to Valvoline and had them do their flush with the vacuum machine and the premix...didn't have to do any math for that.

I think that in the long run, we'll find that the 5.0 is the motor to have.

EDIT: Had the kids neighbor check it, good guy. Picked up a Prestone antifreeze checker, all he could find local. Tested perfect, right there at -34 = 50/50.

Still don't recall draining it down adding that extra gallon of concentrate. Is what it is I guess....must be losing it.
